How do we know if we are buying a dry Riesling or not?

My wife and I had a dry one that we thought was really good and then we tried another brand and it was way too sweet for us.

How can we know it is going to be dry before buying it?

Chances are the label will specify. Dry Rieslings are a wonderful wine with beautiful displays of fruit.....however most Rieslings you see are the other style with more residual sugar. If in doubt ask the guy in the store.

If you do find yourself with a bottle of the sweeter style just pair it with some fresh fruit, this will help cut the sweetness.

As Riesling tends to be a sweet wine perhaps you'd like a Pinot Grigio or a Sauvignon Blanc. If you really want to stick with Riesling talk to the wine person where you shop for wines. As even the same type of wine with the same labels will vary from yaer to year.

While most Riesling production worldwide falls into the categories of sweet or semisweet, a significant amount is vinified dry.
Look in the label for the vinified designation: "dry" in English and "trocken" in German.

I work for a wine distributor and simply enough the wines we carry will say dry or sweet on the label. Also, better wine shops often hold free wine tastings and the staff are usually more than pleased to help with any questions.
