I want to get my boyfriend a portable radio for Christmas. You can use it on the ground to monitor what is going on around you and you can also use it while on your plane if your other radio quits for some reason. I do not know what it is really called or where I can get it. I keep looking through yahoo search but get radio controlled airplanes instead.

I thank you for your kind answer.

It's called a transciever.

I've got an I-com IC-A4 that I bought through a company called BearCom. Google them. They'll be happy to sell you one.

Sporty's Pilot shop also peddles less expensive transcievers. They also have a website that google should take you right to.

My experience with transcievers has been that you get what you pay for. The IC-A4 gives every indication that it's going to last for the rest of my life, and can readily be repaired at a BearCom shop near my home. There's no telling how long the goofy little Yessau transcievers that Sporty's sells will last, even though they're only half the price of the Icom.

It's called a Transceiver. I would highly recommend the company Vertex Standard. Go to the online pilot shop called Sporty's. Heres the link to the radio page:

Click on Vertex Standard. The one I have is called the "Pro V". They discontinued them can came out with the Pilot 3. They are pricy though. Don't get a scanner because you can only receive. With a transceiver you can receive and transmit. Anyways, Good Luck! Email me if you have any questions.
Merry Christmas!

Go to your local general aviation type airport, and see an F.B.O. (Fixed Base Operator) that sells aviation equipment. Plan to spend hundreds of dollars, but the radios are digital and programable. Make sure the radio transmits as well as recieves. This was a great gift idea! Care to be MY girlfriend?

Try Googling "Radio, air to ground, portable". I've been out of the aircraft electronics business for a long time but that was the way they use to be listed in catalogs. Good luck.

I have an Icom A20 that I like a lot, but it's pretty old. Most aviation gear shops like sportys.com will have tons of newer, spiffier, smaller units.

Not to take anything from the ICOM but we've been using Yuasa portable transeivers in operations in Africa for years and they work great, built tough and haven't given any sh*t at all..

Contact a local Flight School. They would be able to recommend specific ones to you.

What it sounds like you are looking for is called a VHF Transceiver. Try searching for that on Google or you could go to www.Sporty's.com or www.mypilotstore.com and browse through ones there.
