I was planing on geting a PS3 this week, but the 399.99 one that is the downside version of the 499.99. I was simply wondering if I could play my old PS2 games and my DVD's as well as Blue Ray?
Plz don't tell me how the X-Box 360 is better or worse because I have already made up my mind. Plz just stick to my question. TYVM.

Yes, you can play any DVD and all Blu Ray films for both PS3 models. As for the PS2 Games:

The 40gb PS3 CANNOT run PS2 games perfectly but can run all PS1 games without a problem. The same goes for the 60gb PS3, with the addition of being able to run the majority of PS2 games without a problem.

Every now and then, Sony will release an update for your console's firmware online. Each time there is an update, they add to the list of PS2 games playable on the PS3.

The problem isn't that the games couldn't be played, but that there are errors such as poor audio and game freezing. This shouldn't be the case with the more popular games though.

the difference between the two is the $399 version (40gb) has no backwards compatibility (no ps1 or ps2 games can be played. the price of the emotions chip that allows other ps3's to play older games is quite pricey). the $499 version has 80gb and the emotions chipset which allows it to play previous generation games. the thought behind this is the ps2 sold over 120 million units wold wide (most ever for a console), so if people want to play ps2 games they most likely already own them which means they already own a ps2. no reason to spend more on backwards compatibility when you purchase a ps3 except convenience. i still have my ps2...somewhere, but i also have the 60gb ps3 (first generation) and played a ps2 game two times since tts purchase. once you step into the next generation of gaming its kinda of hard to go back. thats why a lot of people that own both a wii and ps3 or wii and 360 dont play their wii much. its an outdated system. call of duty 4 on the ps3 is one of the best games ive ever played.

all systems will play DVD and Blu Ray disc. (ps3 games are on bluray so all ps3's have to be a bluray player also)

once you get the ps3 you will discover a TON of other options you have. the ps store (accessed through the ps3) updates once a week with free demo and other game downloads so theres always something new. it can be used as a media server with your computer, an HDR device, remote play with psp, theres just a ton of different things you can do, not to mention the games recently released and the ones coming in the very near future.

Play b3yond and 3njoy

The 40GB PS3 ($399) cannot play PS2 games.

The 80GB PS3 ($499) can play SOME PS2 games - check the PS3 website for which games are playable.

The 60GB PS3 (also $499, but discontinued) can play MOST PS2 games.

All PS3s can play DVDs and blu-ray movies.

If possible, get the 60GB PS3. It's the best bargain because of its hardware-based backwards compatibility.

The 40GB PS3 has Blu-Ray, it can play DVD's, CD's, but it can't play PS2 games, it can play PS1 games, and it has built in WiFi. The 40GB PS3 doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots and it only has 2 USB ports.

Even though the 80GB PS3 is backward compatible it isn't as backward compatible as the 20GB and 60GB PS3's because they have the Emotion Engine chip built in. The 80GB PS3 uses software emulation to be backward compatible.

The 80GB PS3 is backward compatible with both PS1 and PS2 games, it has 4 USB ports, it has built in WiFi, and it has the digital camera flash card slots, it has Blu-Ray and can play DVD's and CD's.

unlike the other people i will cut out the technical gibberish.... the 399.99 one (40gb) has limited backwards compatibility meaning some games you play on the 40gb will have some glitches..... the 499.99 one (60gb) is the best version if you want backwards compatibility... no problems whatsoever.....

both can play blu-rays well....
