I am starting to look at ideas for my wedding...I was thinking a tea length wedding dress. The only reason is because I think they look better on me and i want people to see my shoes! :) the only issue is I really want it to look dressy, whereas lots of people say tea lenght dresses are for if you want it more casual, which I dont. Also how does this look of with the bridesmaids dresses, being that they will also be tea length, i dont want to look like them!

Hmm... a formal tea length wedding dress will definately be difficult to achieve. More than likely it WILL evoke a more casual feel & you will find yourself constantly trying to overcome it while planning the other elements of your wedding. Just my opinion.

With that said, I did find several shorter dresses that I would consider to be more on the "formal side." Here are a few links to look at.....

The chantilly lace on this one makes it a bit more dressy:

looks like a regular wedding gown that was altered:

One of the prettier ones, I think:

*Edited* (link was messed up)This one also comes in Ivory/Cream/Gold:

A bit longer than others:

I really hate poofy dresses, but if that fits your style, you may like something like this:

Another poofy one:

~As far as distinguishing yourself from your bridesmaids, just have their dresses in a bold/bright color, not anything too light (like a pastel color). Or even black might work well, esp for a formal affair. Definately keep them in tea length as well, it would look a little ridiculous to have your girls in long dresses when you step out in your short flirty one.

You can make tea lenght dresses look formal, I wear tea lenght dresses all the time. Just dress them up, formal jewerly and such, and make sure your bridesmaids dresses don't out dress you. Another idea, since you want people to see you shoes, try looking for a dress that is shorter in the front, then gets long in the back. I found some really cute ones like that when I shopped for my wedding dress, don't give up you'll find the right dress. Hell I ended up buying two before I was happy. So your not stuck with what you pick. Alot of people end up buying two dresses....

I have always liked tea-length dresses - they were very popular in the early 80's, when I was first married (though I did not wear one there) and I did wear an ankle length at my second wedding that did show off my shoes. Short dresses are back in style and these days it's a valid fashion option. Many of them are quite elegant and very expensive, too. And if the bridesmaids are in color, I do not think anyone will confuse you with them, they could be in knee-length dresses, anyway. Wear what YOU want - and be happy - not every bride needs a huge white dress with a chapel train.

Tea-length dresses can be very cute, but they are not formal. I had considered one, but decided that it was too casual. While our wedding isn't going to be overly-fussy, I did think a formal dress was called for. Even if you wear a long dress, people will see your shoes when you sit, walk and dance. The dress covers the shoes only when you're standing upright and still, which won't be much of the time!

OK, I too wanted a tea length dress, but changed my mind when I was in the dressing room. A mother was at the shop with her daughter and said, "when in your life are you ever going to wear a full length bridal gown?" She was right-I can wear tea length dresses all the time, but not long gowns!

My bridesmaids wore tea length dresses-I let them select a black cocktail dress of their choice, and the bridal party looked great-very individual.

If you wear white and your bridesmaids wear colors, then you'll stand out among them quite easily.

I think tea length dresses are cute, but they aren't what I would say highly formal, if that's what you're going for. I think they're dressy to a more 'casual' extent. I love tea length wedding dresses because they just make the bride seem lighter and float on clouds, relaxed, and beautiful.

If you decide to go with tea lenght and want to look dressier, just make sure to have nice jewelry, maybe some embroidery on the dress with beads or crystals. A colored sash even (if you are a bit daring with color!)

That's my opinion. I hope it helps.

I wore a tea length dress and it was not casual, but it was informal. I can email you pictures if you want to see, I am sorry I cannot post here as I have none on my work PC. If you have a underskirts of net that shows just slightly below the hem line it looks elegant like a ballerina.

I think if your having a smaller wedding, it will be fine. Try a few on and see how you feel in them. If your having over 60-75 guests, I think the Tea Length would be too casual.

You know what...it's your wedding you can wear whatever you like honey! You can have your dress more lacey and what not while the bridesmaids are just a plain, solid color. Don't worry about what other's think, it's your day make it to where when you look back on the pictures all you have are happy memories, not regretful ones.

Tea length DOES mean casual.... However! I have an idea. Get yourself you wedding GOWN, then change into a tea-length party dress for the reception. My friends ALL do this. The gown is worn for the ceremony and the reception introduction, then they sneak off and change into something more casual for the drinking, eating and dancing. It's more fun and less drama. Heck, most of us kick off our shoes for the reception anyway!

You can get a great formal tea length dress at Macy's or any department store.

Sorry dear but tea length is much more casual. It was designed for afternoon tea, thus the name tea length. IF you want formal then you need a gown.

Many brides are changing out of the wedding gown to attend the reception, I even went to one wedding where the bride changed into a different wedding gown for the reception.

The bride wears white and no one else is supposed to wear it so I think that makes the bride stand out no matter what she wears.
