ok how far apart should the 2 rear speakers be

You'll find that the two added speakers in the 7.1 set up are in MONO...That is, those TWO extra speakers only produce ONE channel of sound...And even then, that ONE extra channel is usually just "pulled" and "mixed" from the 4th and 5th rear speakers.

But if you must have the "EX" of Dolby and the "ES" from DTS, save your money and just add one speaker and go with the 6.1 instead...Click here for a placement chart: http://www.avtruths.com/speaker.html

DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF THE ROOM AND THE SIZE OF THE SPEAKERS. BASICALLY, IT COMES DOWN TO EXPERIMENTATION AND NOT ONLY HOW FAR APART THEY SHOULD BE BUT HOW YOU WANT TO FACE THEM. FACING THEM TO THE FRONT OF THE ROOM MAY NOT ALWAYS BE BEST, YOU MAY WANT TO CANTER THEM FACING THEM TO THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, A 10X10 ROOM, IT WOULD BE BEST TO KEEP THE SPEAKERS 6 FEET APART, OBVIOUSLY CENTERED EQUALLY FROM THE WALLS.

Same width as the front main speakers. Divide the wall into 3rds, place them there.

i depends on the size of your room-mine is smallish so my rears are about 18 inches either side of my listening chair. it's all about experimentation.
