Not sure what you mean by "your mainland," but I'm guessing you mean a foreign country. If you're a US Citizen, you can stay as long as you want anywhere you want (assuming the foreign country allows that) and then come back to the USA. Do you have a US Passport? Then you're a US Citizen.

If you're not a citizen, but a "green card holder," you can stay up to a year outside the USA. If you plan to be outside the USA for an extended period of time, check with INS where you live and ask for a "Travel Document." This is INS' acknowledgment that you plan to be outside the USA for over a year and they agree it's OK.

US citizen is allowed 90 days on a single entry or 2 entry visa. My recent visa is a multi entry visa which allows me to stay 120 days after each entry. If other than L visa it will depend on the reason for entering Mainland China. Visit the Chinese Embassy website for more information> However, I have found that some of the information on the site is outdated. Just ask questions at the embassy and review the visa once you recieve it. You can download a copy of the visa application from the embassy website.
