When the body gets hurt, sometimes the circulation of the blood is restricted. To get around this, your body will swell at the point where the blood is restricted. Normally, there is either bruising or inflammation around this area.

The problem area can also be underneath the skin as well as obviously visible.

I think those are called prostaglandins, and they rush in to repair the wounded area.

Function

There are currently nine known prostaglandin receptors on various cell types. Prostaglandins ligate a subfamily of cell surface seven-transmembrane receptors, G-protein-coupled receptors. These receptors are termed DP1-2, EP1-4, FP, IP, and TP, corresponding to the receptor that ligates the corresponding prostaglandin (e.g., DP1-2 receptors bind to PGD2).

These varied receptors mean that Prostaglandins thus act on a variety of cells, and have a wide variety of actions:

* cause constriction or dilatation in vascular smooth muscle cells
* cause aggregation or disaggregation of platelets
* sensitize spinal neurons to pain
* constrict smooth muscle
* regulate inflammatory mediation
* regulate calcium movement
* regulate hormone regulation
* control cell growth

Prostaglandins are potent but have a short half-life before being inactivated and excreted. Therefore, they exert only a paracrine (locally active) or autocrine (acting on the same cell from which it is synthesized) function.

There are a lot of blood vessels that run over the skull and in the scalp, the bump is the fluid that builds up quickly from those being opened up under the skin and still circulating.

When you bump your head , you obvoiusly hurt yourself so your body tries to fix it , but it dosnt stay there that long because your body is very quick at repairing itself.

The blood coagulates in that spot because with the impact the blood vessels on that spot have burst and the blood dries out forming small "balls" wich cause the spot to swell.
