You become a good fighter by practice, there is no other way. Regardless of the system you study, you have to practice. Through practice, you develop confidence, which is very important. As far as bravery- Being brave isn't about not having fear, being brave is the ability to do what is right even when you are afraid.

To be 'good,' and even better than just 'good' you must master self-discipline. If you are serious about becoming a proficient fighter you must train hard every day, and if you haven't already, start a martial art with a teacher who is an excellent motivator.
To be 'brave' you have to be self confident. To achieve self confidence try to participate in as many sparring matches and tournaments as possible, so you can put your abilities to the test and improve them.
Hope I've been a help.

I think you need to ask yourself what is it that you fear first. Is it the fear of losing and failure or is the fear of physical injury or a combination of both or just perhaps the fear of the unknown? Try to separate your physical fears from the mental and emotional ones first. Realize that if you lose your friends will still respect you, and still admire you and that it is in how you lose that you sometimes also lose the respect of others-not the fact that you lost. Many people lose a fight and I am not ashamed to say that I have lost one or two in my liftetime also.
As for the physical aspects they are often times temporary and injuries heal and so a certain amount of contact in your training and sparring can help allay your fears with this aspect. Pain and your tolerance for this as well as your approach to all of it is partially built on this. That is where the knowledge and expereience of a good coach or instructor can be helpful along with you knowing that you have done everything within your power to prepare yourself for your fight. While you can not directly control what your opponent does or how good he is you do have direct control over that for yourself and can indirectly influence that of your opponent's sometimes. So try to look at it objectivley and concentrate on your plan of execution, your skills, and technique and how well you carry that all out. This is something that comes with time and experience and so a case of the butterflies before your first few fights is not that unusual.
Street situations are more difficult in that either they happen so fast and adrenalin kicks in or people have so little experience that they are not used to the phsycial and mental aspects of confrontation. It is not unusual to have an adult student say something like they have not ever been in a fight or been in a fight since third grade. Once again this is where training, drilling and constant practice can be helpful in overcoming a lot of this under the guidance of a good instructor.

You will become a good and confident fighter by training with contact. Train in striking arts such as western boxing and/or Muay Thai and in grappling arts such as judo and/or jujitsu to be effective at any range or situation.
To be a brave fighter takes warrior spirit. It is a strength of character that can't be taught. You can be shown the way but it is something you have to cultivate in yourself.
For you to ask that question you are already moving in the right direction. Most people want to just learn how to knock people out or choke someone out, etc. Someone who will protect their family and friends would ask the way you did. Please continue down the right path by finding instructors of the same mindset as you.

You become good by knowing if you really want it and are willing to sacrifice things you know you need to give up to successfully train and condition yourself, also knowing that you do need guidance (professional trainer). And even when you dont train in class, you practice in your free time using whatever you have to practice with.
To become a brave fighter, it sounds stupid, but you just have to do it. Know that everyone you will train with, spar with and compete against has been in your shoes before as well. Know that they too have been new and unkowledged as well as scared to do what they want. Its not easy to become a fighter, it can be very intimidating just starting out in a class. Know all those things, understand them and believe in yourself, never doubt yourself, the people you train with or your opponent. And accept your fears and anxiety, they will help drive you and keep you focused.

"I can teach anyone how to fight, but I can't teach you to fight"
This was a quote i heard recently and forgot who said it. It means that someone can tell you how to fight, but they can't teach you to fight the battle.
Just b/c you train and spar everyday in the dojo doesn't mean that your going to be able to fight any time any where. To be a brave fighter and actually fight you must have a certain mentallity. No one is ever born with this mentality, you must recieve this mentality by training in that mind set. I'm not saying go out and spar, i'm saying train with that mentality everytime you go into the dojo. Kill or be killed, thats how it works.

A brave fighter is one who is not afraid to walk away from a challenge.
Train hard and hone your skills, become the master of your own fate. That is all that you can do.
