sphere: 2. any rounded body approximately of this form; a globular mass, shell, etc.
General Definition of a Sphere
Objective: Students will be able to define a sphere.
Sphere is the set of points that are equidistant from a special point in the space. The special point is the center. The distance between a point on the surface of a sphere and the center is the radius.
Since the cross-section plane of a sphere is a circle, many term used with a **circle can also be applied to a sphere**.

I see absolutely no reason whatsoever for name-calling.
This woman, whom many of you should only be fortunate enough to know, is asking a question she has thought out to the best of her knowledge. Nowhere does she ask for all the things in the Bible that are either proved incorrect or unsubstantiated; instead, she makes a few good points about the Bible and science and inquires of her findings so as to gain greater knowledge. This is not a "kick in the face" to atheists. Trust me. I am one. I don't see EyeLovesJesus telling all non-Christians we're going to hell in a handbasket or threatening us with some terrible punishment. She is taking the knowledge she has of the Bible and science and asking questions, not making statements. The name-calling is completely undeserved. There are some absolutely wonderful people of all religions here. To call someone an "imbecile" because they don't know what you do translates to utter conceit. If you really know what you know there is a way to teach it without hurting people's feelings, period. I see too often lately how we as atheists attack too quickly. Sure, you may be tired of the "same old questions" but so are they. And this one is well-thought out absolutely NOT a violation of Yahoo's TOS. Anyone who speaks like that, however, moves automatically to my blocked list. This is not a Nazi regime.
As for my answer to your questions, EyeLJ, I can say only that if you look at each answer you will learn something new and different about science. Many people proposed differing ideas long before the Bible was written and like the men who wrote the Bible (according to God's word, yes, but translated by common men), different ideas were pushed about. Daniel believed in a flat earth. Elihu believed much the same. Not all things reported in the Bible are endorsed by the Bible, so much of it comes down to picking and choosing. The same can be said for many learned scholars of the day who failed to realize the earth was spherical.
The main difference between the two is that as technology has improved and science can prove many of its points, those who would still believe the earth is flat may be proved wrong. These are a few other Biblical mistakes that scientists have proved incorrect beyond a reasonable doubt:
"The Bible states that the origin of the great coal deposits of the world were formed from plant material that was floating on the seas during the Flood. Unknown forces caused the plant material to collect in great, broad mats and then to rapidly sink to the bottom and be covered over with uniform layers of sediment. This story reaches the point of total absurdity when we realize that in most coal fields there is a vertical sequence of beds of coal, one above the other, separated by several thick strata of sedimentary rock of different types, including limestone. In some coal fields certain of these limestone strata are of freshwater origin, and others are of marine origin, with marine fossils... The Bible is said to teach that the entire great era of the dinosaurs occurred during the life of the human race... Stories attempt to explain the vast deposits of marine fossils in the strata of the earth's crust and sea floor. (Others) make the claim that most plants and many animals, especially marine animals, were able, before the Flood, to grow and reproduce dozens or scores of times faster than they can now. The (Bible states that the Earth's) magnetic field has allegedly undergone a simple, rapid process of decay over a period of approximately 10,000 years. The large number of magnetic reversals that are permanently recorded in the strata of so many rock formations of the world are said to be meaningless with regard to the age of the rock formations, or of the earth."
The Bible is unfortunately limited to the knowledge of the people who wrote it and thus must be looked at in the era it was written. We knew far less then and we are just beginning to learn ever so much more. If God is indeed an all-knowing entity then He too must be aware that any translation given to man will be received only within the capacity of that man's gift for memory and ability to retain and comprehend new things. This is what leaves it so lacking in the minds of many non-Christians, though the same can be said to be true for ALL religions. I find your questions extraordinary however; it is obvious you took time to write your inquiries and you were, as ever, intelligent and kind in your explanation. I hope that some of the explanations from those who know science far better than I have helped. I can tell you that while it seems impossible to me that a god created the universe all around us (especially as the regions outside the earth are hardly mentioned at all) I also understand that many writers and even proclaimed scientists speak in equivocal language and attempt to make fact from metaphor. I admit that I have done this previously in arguing with a Christian. The real question should have been, "What in the Bible can be interpreted literally, and who's to say so?" If it all can then we know for sure there are huge mistakes and gaps in the Biblical account. If not, then only the men who wrote it can know where the metaphors lie. In Job 38:13 it is written thusly: "That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it." Now, as well all know, there are no "ends" to the earth as the earth is not flat. The Old Testament writings point to the fact that people then believed there were indeed "ends' to the earth by which they may fall off, and the idea that there were living creatures at the antipodes of the earth was considered heresy. Still, I believe the quote from Job can be taken metaphorically. It is about wickedness, not the circumference or shape of the earth itself. It is much like me saying "I've got the whole world in my hands". Obviously, this is not possible. It is metaphorical. Still, I am certainly not able to interpret what is or isn't literal in the Bible. None of us are. That is left with its authors and translators.
I think you are wonderful, EyeLovesJesus. Please don't let the rudeness and egoism of a few ruin your day. Many of us speak without thinking; I have been known to "stick my foot in it" at least once a day. Forgive, as is your nature, and realize that sometimes people's real lives spill over into the way they respond to questions here. I've made a number of off-putting comments when I've had a bad day too. The trick is to catch oneself doing it and to apologize the moment one realizes he or she has. I hope these cookies and a nice cup of hot tea will bring you back to yourself in no time. (((EyeLovesJesus)))

Okay, I just recently made the transition from being athiest to now Christian. But I have some deep roots in Science having a master's degree in metrology which is very much physics. I also have a bachelor's degree in Ancient History of the Levant (Mesopotamia) I can predate all the Biblical observations with the Epic of Gilgamesh the Assyrian Kings lists that predate te earliest parts of the Bible by 1000 to 3000 years. Actually, only an idiot would believe the earth flat. Anyone that could understand the concept of the wheel would discover the earth a sphere revolving and rotating around the sun.
But the Bible strikes out on many scientific concepts too. During the 16th Century many experts sought to resolve the Bible with the new emergence of science. That is still ongoing. I am in pursuit of that just for myself. A big problem I have is the Flood. If it happened as stated as a global flood covering the mountains it would require 3 times all the water on and in the earth and in the atmosphere. I have a problem with "What happened to all that water?" I contend flooding the earth was regional and covered the mountains in perhaps the Black Sea or Bosphorous area. That would work to match science. Interchanging that the world was in fact the area the inhabitants traveled lived and could see.
I do have a problem with some Christians that on one hand like to disprove science such as carbon dating, but conveniently will use the parts of science that support the Bible (like DNA) I just feel some take the Bible a little too literal or miss that some might be parabales or even pure myth to try to explain things to the people living 2000-3000 years ago when science simply did not exist.

My sister (a faithful girl) has no real answer for this, and fails to consider that religion, whilst a moral code for our lives, is also a very lucrative business. I personally believe that the Bible is much like Cinderella & Robin Hood. Basically that means it is folk lore that was written down after the facts and was embellished by the Gospels of each of Jesus's Twelve Apostles; in what could be construed as a financial decision on their part. Just take one look at the Vatican, one of the richest organizations of all time and it is consider non-profit because they slapped the "religious label" onto it.

although i am not a christian, and i do not agree with everything in the bible you have made some good points.
i have never understood why evolution and creationism have to be mutually exclusive. i consider the bible to be more of an inspired history book. it contains a lot of common sense wisdom, and shouldn't just be summarily dismissed.
i also agree that sometimes sarcasm can be carried too far. it is one thing to be sarcastic about an arrogant question, and quite another to be simply rude for no reason.
i don't think that you deserved some of the answers you have received. i have never seen you to be anything but polite and kind in your postings. sometimes we tend to get a little heated here, but for the most part the people here are very nice.

I'm afraid I must object to each mention of "SCIENCE THEN". The scientific method was developed about one thousand years ago in what is now Iraq. Whatever the common belief may have been two or three thousand years ago, it was not supported by science, since science did not yet exist. That may seem like a pedantic distinction, but it is actually quite significant.

these are good questions.
but i would like to point out that 'science' as we know it today, was known and used by many ancient peoples that were around before the bible.
the celts, the aztecs, egyptians; go back further and further and you can find evidence of these people aligning their standing stones with the orbit of venus, or using herbs, honey etc for healing. i agree that a circle is not a sphere, but then again i love terry pratchett books and his discworld novels do it for me every time lol :D
there are ways and means of disagreeing, and some of the responses here are rather rude and embarrassing.
none of us is a genius, otherwise we would not be bothering our huge brains on YAHOO! i myself was shocked by the venomous comments regarding one of my replies recently. there really is no need!
to question and to wonder is a good human trait. if we are correct in our assumptions, all well and good. if we are off course, gentle and friendly guidance is all that is required.
the overly sarcastic and nasty-comment culture on here is getting a little wearying.
good luck with your quest for knowledge.

THE BIBLE
"God" made man out of mud and woman from a rib of the man.
SCIENCE NOW
Man and women are not mud based or rib based organisms; they clearly evolved from other species.
You are really stretching on this one. And you can cherry pick from the bible to support any issue you desire because there are so many disparate quotes that can be interpreted in 1000 different ways and contradict each other along the way.

Absolutely outstanding question and examples. If I had 10 stars to give you I would. Great job! The bible reigns.
MeThrice Baked - You make some great points and you are a very compassionate person as well, but I must tell you, the bible doesn't say anywhere that man was alive with the dinosaurs. Creationists believe that because of their interpretation that the 6 days of creation were 24 hour days. But science and other scriptures in the bible say otherwise. Just thought I'd clarify that.
Ajfreder - I don't know what bible you're reading but mine doesn't say the earth is the center of the universe. Would you like to tell us where the scripture is you're talking about?
