it takes how long to get your green card after you file for one based on asylum?

This is too difficult to answer simply. A lot depends on factors beyond your control or my ken. If you file for asylum, you'll probably be granted a temporary permit to stay. This is not a "Green Card." The other factors may include - How many other people are in line ahead of you for asylum, if there are any mitigating or aggravating factors in your case, and even which country you're from. Don't forget, we're coming up on holidays, and even INS takes vacations.

In general, I'd guess anywhere from three months (with no problems associated with your application) to several years (assuming some difficulties).

I've seen regular immigrants who've received their green card as fast as three months, but that I-151 stamp in your passport is good for a year for a reason- INS thinks it may take a year.

One suggestion- Don't go home. If you visit the place from which you're asking asylum, it becomes difficult to believe you *need* asylum. If you state, "I'm afraid for my security in Lower Slobovia" and then you go back as soon as you get some immigration status here, the very reasonable question anyone would ask is "Why did you go back if you're so afraid to be there?"
