We look for answers beyond this world when we have gone through a truly hard time.

My dad was ill recently and the doc predicted that he would not recover. He had a life threatening illness but they could not determine what it was in order to treat it. They tried all sorts and he suffered a lot, it definitely didn't feel like God was there for me at that time. We all believed he would die and then he made it through.

When the worst was over, I believe there was something else beyond our understanding guiding this outcome. I believe this because even the doctors were baffled by his illness and than shocked that he made it.

I love the footprints poem a friend of mine died 2 years ago at the age of 46 and that was the poem chosen for his memorial card.

Most of the time people are so much into their problems that they forget how to look at the time. God lets things happen for a reason. You maybe experiencing something bad at the time but that is only to prepare you for a worse challenge to be faced in the future.

I think because sometimes we can be selfish and forget about God in bad and in good things that happen in our lives. We become self absorbed and God still has mercy on us and walks with us every step of the way.

It's important to praise Him through the storm because sometimes you may find something that you never knew you would learn. May be if you noticed God while going through a time He could show you a shell in the sand...

Perhaps you want to believe God was there for you afterwards cause its a comforting thought, also it gives your suffering some meaning. The mind could be forgiven for pondering his lack of spiritual presence during an event or some how feel "alone".

I look back over my life and see how often he has helped, guided me and carried me through the bad parts. When I was left alone when my mum died he sent me good friends to help me cope. When I got married he was there through good and bad times and helped me raise my children to become good people. The best thing he did was when I didnt know him, he knew me and the greatest of all led me to his organisation. Not a word has failed that he promised.

Right. And then you die a horrible death and your relatives rationalize it saying it was 'God's will'.

It's fear and ego.

People are afraid and so they invent an invisible friend to help them, understand them, protect them and as a scape goat for when bad things happen to them.

People stick too their beliefs even when things go wrong out of ego. Changing your beliefs is like saying 'I was wrong'. How often do people admit that they were wrong?

So, they rationalize.

we are human and when things bad happen we only think of ourselves and how it affects us. we do not see the implications it will have years down the road. maybe after what has happened happens we realize that while we were too worried groveling in our own mire God was doing this to help us grow in our faith etc.

No not at all. I feel that Jesus is looking after me all the time, especially during the bad times.
I know the poem you mean. It doesn't connect with me at all.

I don't. I only ever got out of a tight spot by working my backside off, being honest and realising that at times, $hit happens and there;s nothing you can do about it.
