It's a perfectly understandable position. They grew up with "Bewitched" and know that it's harmless fantasy and not diabolical at all. But "Harry Potter" is a lot of reading and there's spooky stuff in there and, well, you have to draw a line somewhere!
Yeah, it's pretty hypocritical.

It's perfectly sensible. If you read Harry Potter you automatically enter into a pact with Beezelbub.
I once walked past a book store and caught a glimpse of a quote from the book. Fortunately there was a thorny bush nearby. If it wasn't for good ol' self-flagellation I don't know what would have happened. Praise Jesus.

That is hilarious and hypocritical. However, all the bible thumpers that rail against Harry Potter are already hypocritical. The magic and monsters of the bible fairy tales are okay, but the ones in Harry Potter are somehow going to subvert the minds of children. Too funny.
Silly christians, myths are for kids.

Most religious people are hypocrites. Harry Potter does not promote evil and witchcraft. It's not like they're sacrificing babies and doing the devil's work or something. That family is retarded.

You know...you are right. There are many subtle and not so subtle ways that spiritistic influence is around us. And, perhaps some people either don't realize that, or pick and choose. Either way, it sounds like you have a conscience...good! Continue reading your Bible and learning what the REAL message is and you will find greater happiness in doing so. Be kind to others and try and help others realize that (in a peaceful way). You will not win them all, however.
Or, maybe you don't see anything wrong with either one. That is your choice and decision. :-)

Why don't you ask their justification? I have nothing against Harry Potter, but perhaps they think that Bewitched is lighthearted and inconsequential?

It seems a bit odd, though I see nothing wrong with either. I refer to myself as a Pagan-Influenced Christian. I worship only the Holy Trinity but use Pagan rites and spells as a means of connecting with my Creator. (as well as prayer and other "traditional" forms of Christian worship. I view God as the Author of all magick and magick as simply natural laws of the Universe He created. I came to this conclusion while studying other religions and being unable to deny certain truths. Then ultimately realizing that these teachings were not invalidated by the Bible (if anything, were supported), nor did they invalidate the scriptures. I consider myself a Christian though my personal beliefs are not welcome in the Christian church. I practice in solitude in order not to offend anyone or be asked to engage in any religious debate.
Brightest Blessings

Reminds me of the youths who walked out of a cinema because the film was violent. As they walked home they heard people cheering on two fighting men, and they said to each other "Hurry! Let's go and watch!!!"

And I bet they watch the Wizard of Oz every year.
It's not that one is evil while the others aren't. It's that one was made into a big issue while the others weren't.

People are rarely consistent. You're right. They are wrong. Nothing at all wrong with Harry Potter.
