There are Hav-a-Hart live catch traps that are the right size for a squirrel. They cost about $30 and will last for years.

You press on the levers of the trap and both ends open wide. Then you hook those levers onto the bait platform in the center of the trap. You put food like acorns or nuts on that center platform and put the trap down where squirrels seem to be near. They walk into the open trap and touch that center platform and the end doors swing down and jam closed. Then you have the squirrel in there ready to be removed from the area or whatever you had in mind (Brunswick stew maybe).

When we were overrun with squirrels last year I caught several dozen using this trap. It works for ground squirrels (chipmunks) or tree squirrels.

There are a number of animal friendly traps on the market that do not harm the animal. I do not understand why you want to catch a squirrel. A squirrel will bite the hurt out of you and they are prone to carry diseases.

i dont think squirls make good bait man, unless you use it to catch sharks, even then it is questionable.

Here's a good picture of it. Or you could dig a hole and put leaves over it. When the squirrel falls in the hole cover the hole back up with the dirt.
