No home remedy, the cat needs to see a vet. It could be as simple as a viral upper respiratory infection, or it could be cancer, bacterial pneumonia, heart failure, any number of things. A cat I had for all of 4 days before it died of distemper (got it at the shelter I adopted it from) and he was purring when he was really sick. This is not something you can take care of yourself!

A rough purr and a heavy cough sounds like feline asthma (tho it could be a URI, or other health issue as well).
Until you know the exact cause (as diagnosed by a vet) you cannot know how to treat it—even with a home remedy. I know of no "home remedy" (apart from removing all potential irritants: dust mites, chemicals and perfumes, etc.) for treating asthma. A cat with asthma really needs inhaled meds and/or additional steroids as prescribed by your vet.
Please take your cat to the vet to be examined. Treating asthma preventatively is much easier (and cheaper) than treating a full-blown asthma attack on an emergency basis.

In a word yes. In more words: The exact reason for purring is unknown. Cats often purr when stroked, or when eating. I have heard a mother cat purring when her kittens where feeding and kittens purr in responce. Cats sometimes purr when injured or sick, I have had a cat who became very ill very quickly and he continued to purr despite the fact he was in a very bad way (Vet had to put him down) but One theory I found online says that it is not a sign of showing love but attempting friendship, for example, when a cat is nervous it may purr to avoid being hurt.

You don't know what is causing the gurgly purr and cough. There is no reason to try self treating when you don't even know what you're treating FOR.
It is more than likely something that will require a prescribed medicine, whether its antibiotic or otherwise. Not something you can fix with a home-remedy.

well ur the same guy who is willing to put his dog in the bed of a truck and drive 70 down the highway so something tells me that ur going to take him out back and shoot him rather than take him to the vet. when u have a sick pet u take care of it. u dont try to be cheap and do home remedies. most of the time u do more harm to the animal than good.

Purrs are not only for when they are happy, it can also be when they are in pain. I don't normally push vets but for this, I would go.
