The reason being is because God was focused exclusively on the Law which was set down and instituted by Moses. God was wrathful to demonstrate on simple point: NO ONE can entire into heaven with the Law. This was all designed to show that there is an intrinic need for the Messiah, which would release us from the Law. When that occurred, through Jesus, there was an intercessor for Humankind, thereby making God less wrathful...bridging the gap between us and Him.
Look at it this way. God is matter and sin is antimatter...they cannot exist in the same place. So when we chose to sin in the OT, we were choosing to operate in a sphere outside of God's protection...and therefore who were we succeptible to...Lucifer.
These were the two situations that materialized in the OT (the second one, still is prevalent today since the Messiah did not absolve free-will.)
Hope this helps.

When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. (1 Cor 13)
In the OT mankind was more child like ... there is evolution & de-evolution in spirituality. It only makes sense that God may come accross wrathful to those who are child like.

Same God struck down Ananias and Sephira for cheating the Holy Spirit.
Same God killed King Herod and had him eaten by worms.
Same God sends Egypt-styled plagues in Revelation.
He is the same God, only in the New Testament, the sacrifice of Christ fulfilled the requirements of judgment regarding the law of sin and death.

Because he was trying to set up a holy nation in which to produce His son and people kept screwing up. Much like a parent trying to raise a responsible child but the kid just won't do what they're told, even to the point of danger.

Funny how god tends to take on whatever qualities his followers have. Now god even likes ecology when only a few decades ago he hated it.
