Hi- Make sure you ask the Surgeon and the Anesthesiologist ALL the questions you can think of. This is IMPORTANT! It is normal to be nervous. Write a list of your questions down today, and have them ready. There will be some pain, I'm not going to lie to you. Make sure that you have pain meds (even in liquid for the first few days-Pill form if it is easy to swallow) and DRINK LOTS of fluids- not pop! Water, juices, etc. Do not get dehydrated. Soothing things are ice cream and popscycles. Also, more than likely, you will start with Ice chips, then progress to all liquids as tolerated. Ask them about post-op nausea, and how to avoid this. It sounds like you have a chronic condition re: your tonsils, and it beats taking antibiotics constantly, as your body becomes resistant to them. You will begin to feel better in a matter of days. You will have an IV until you are able to show that you are keeping fluids down successfully. The OR will be COLD, and this is to help with the spread of bacteria. There are warm blankets back there, so ask for them, frequently, if need be. You will see lots of equipment. Just remember, this will not all be used on you. Laser tonsil removal is much better than past procedures. In the long run, you'll be very glad you had this procedure done, and I just know it will be successful! I wish you the best, and hope all goes well. E-mail me and let me know how you are feeling. GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE!

I haven't personally had my tonsils out (yet... I have lots of problems with mine so, I'm sure it'll happen eventually ha), but my fiance has and this is what he's always said about the experience...
It will hurt of course, (I mean think about how your throat feels just from a sore throat) but they will supply you with pain medication while you're still in the hospital. At first it will more than likely be through IV (such as Morphine), since they won't want you trying to swallow a pill right away.
Depending on your doctor and how your surgery's outcome is, the time will vary on how soon you can have water/fluids. It will not be right away though. You will have an IV the whole time you're in the hospital to give you fluids so, you don't need to worry about being too thirsty.
When you are allowed fluids, that's all they will give you at first (juice, water, popsicle, soup), then they will move onto more solid food such as jello, and icecream.
They will get you up and walking around later in the day (normal procedure).
You will probably sleep for awhile after your surgery.
Everything should go fine, but there is always a chance you could react differently than the average person.
When I was in the hospital after a car accident in '06 (I was in a step-down from ICU- Progressive Care Unit), and the patient next to me was a 12 year old boy who had his tonsils out and he had a LOT of pain. But, he was also having a negative mental response to the Morphine they were giving him.
I'm not trying to scare you, you just need to know that there is always a chance you could react badly. It's unlikely, though.

First of all I am a nurse, and secondly, I just had mine removed a few months ago.....soooooooooooo
yes the older you are the more pain you will experience. I was 32, and I was in a lot of pain for 12 days, and then for about 4 or 5 more days of discomfort when yawing, and sneezing.
If the tonsils are infected, definitely get it over with.
Good luck, and get it over with sooner than later.
Warm drinks like chicken broth tastes better than the ice cream did. Dont do it to close to Christmas.!

from a person who had her tonsils removed just so you know long after this is over for you you still will have that occasional sore throat
the doctors told me and my pareents, before mine was removed, that you never have anymore sore throats once tonsils are removed. not true. of course i realized now that they only said it to get that money...as usual. just thought i'd let you know since none of the doctors or nurses here mentioned that above. but there is immediate pain you'll have for a while right after the surgery. they gave me lots of ice-cream and jello. helped soothed the pain a lot. :) good luck.

Laser surgery is the minimally invasive so you wont have as much pain/scarring as you would from normal surgical procedures. But since you are having part of your body removed there will be scarring, soreness and sensitivity to hot/cold for a while. It varies for each person but it would be dramatically more painful/longer healing time without laser surgery. You're on the good end of the deal.
The best thing you can do after is be careful how widely you open your mouth so you do not stretch your scar tissue, and also the types of things you eat, be sensitive to that part of your mouth/throat to minimize healing time.

A chest x-ray would be waiting to tell if there is something out of line along with your ribcage. Do you have soreness in the rib/chest area? Chlorine in the water each and every from time to time reasons hives, exceedingly in swimming pools and warm tubs. Having your bathe water too heat might reason the crimson blotches.

When you come out of surgery your throat is going to hurt yes you'll be desperate to drink water but right after surgery you won't be allowed...still those are the worst after effects you've got nothing to worry about think of you're fear as a new experience

You might hurt some after surgery but they'll give you pain medicine..the post op pain is only temporary and guess what..no more infections after the surgery so your throat will feel much better and you should breath alot better too.
