i have a little yorkie. he is 3 years old and i am having some problems with his behavior. everytime someone yells at me he threatens to attack by growling and jumping on them. he hasnt gotten to the point of biting yet. he follows me around everywhere even to the bathroom and if i dont let him into the bathroom while i shower he will just wait at the door and take a nap until i come out. certain things he does are cute but some are just rude. like for example when i get home from work i knock at the door ( i dont have a key yet) he goes crazy. not when others knock only when i do. he wants to attack everyone and runs around from one side of the house to the door telling everyone im home. he gets really angry at everyone in te house when i come in. i dont understand why he does that. why does me being gone all day make him so mad at my mom and my sister? its so strange.

Yorkies are extremely loyal and apparently you are his chosen person. His behavior isn't all that unusual. The issue with him growling and jumping is a protective instinct but it needs to be stopped before he does bite someone. Make sure you teach him that this behavior is unacceptable to you. Yorkies are smart. With some patience and consistency he'll learn. Good luck!

Despite all the talk of packs and pack leaders, most of it is rubbish, sorry folks. The original studies that were done on wolves (from where this pack info has been derived) were done on captive wolves and as it turns out captive wolves and free wolves behave differently. Wolf packs are family groups. The 'pack leaders' are mom and dad with siblings forming the rest of the group. Scientists don't even call them 'alpha' anymore. But even more to the point, dogs aren't wolves and wild dog packs aren't anything like wolf packs.

Protective is often used to describe dogs that are in fact afraid. Why you think your dog is doing something (running around to tell everyone your home for example) may be right but chances are your interpretation of your dog's behavior is not correct, few people really understand why their dog does something, they just make something up that makes sense to them.

You should teach your dog the behavior you want from him. Teach him a good solid sit/stay. The more training you do with your dog the better chances it has to develop more confidence and self control. If you've never been to a training class with your dog I highly recommend it. Forget all the talk about pack leaders, etc. and learn how dogs really learn how to behave the way we want them to.

He's very protective of you..He's being a good guard dog and showing his affection. He may just need some positive reinforcement to help show him the correct way to behave. Check out some places for behavioral training or check a book out from the library on dog training.

He hasn't been taught better. He has decided that you are his pack and he is the pack leader. So his job is to keep you in line and protect you. The behavior can be changed but you will have to work at it and your Mom will need to help. Go to the web site of cesar MIllan. He is one of the best dog trainers I've every seen. He is amazing.
