The first 2 answers were completly wrong.

The only PS3's that have almost full backward compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games is the 20GB and 60GB PS3.

The 80GB PS3 is backward compatible, but it can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games as the 20GB and 60GB PS3's.

And the 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games.

20gb and 60gb ps3 have full backward compatibility for ps2 games, because they are using emotion engine.

80gb ps3 can play some ps2 games, but cannot play all of them because they are using software emulation.

40gb ps3 cannot play ps2 games.

if you want a ps3 that play all the ps2 games and doesn't care about the online and wifi get the 20gb, but if you want with almost everything get the 60gb.

I have the original 60GB version (got it about a week after the launch late 2006) -- and it has full backward compatibility.

I think maybe the 80GB version does, too, but not the 40GB.

Hope that helps. To be sure, you should check the specs for the Systems before you buy.

You'll LOVE the PS3. It's amazing -- especially if you have an HDTV!

One of the more recent firmware updates added DVD upscaling, too, so your DVDs will look great upconverted to High-Def through your PS3!

Enjoy!
