i just want to say that i think your dog is so beautiful! i think thats a brilliant idea, giving your dog some company. but becarfull no to give the puppy more attention than you do the bigger dog. they can get jelious and unruly. if you feel that you are going to "love" or give more attention to one more than the other then i dont think a second dog will be "fair" for your first one. if you can love them both and give them eaqual attention the go for it!

I have a weinaraner cross who is now 2 years old and I work 8am till half 4. Coz she was on her own she kept destroying things coz of the boredom I guess. In June I got a 9 week old english mastiff and since then she hasn't been naughty in the day. I guess its coz they are playing most of the time coz they get on so well. I would say get the puppy as even when I am home they are more occupied with each other. Also it was so much easier to train the new puppy as it seemed like she was copying the other dog. I would say go for it.

Heck, you are only gone a few hours -- he sleeps more than anything while you are gone... as long as you spend good quality time with him when you are there, I see no reason to get a puppy. A puppy would need you home more and actually take attention AWAY from your present dog. He would likely prefer to have you to his own as most dogs do. He has only had you a few months -- let him have you for a while more or you are just going to make the potential for a conflict to arise. He is perfectly happy being 'top dog' with you as his owner without having to compete with a puppy...

It sounds like a good idea at first, and your vet would have an opinion on that, I'm sure.
The reason your dog is so upset when you leave him is that you bought a "working" dog. They are bred to go everywhere with you, to find bombs, be trained, work out, be busy.
Can you pay enough attention to two "working" dogs? Both need training and working out and lots of attention. Do you have the time and energy?
These dogs are remarkable in their intelligence. It seems a waste to just make a pet of him and not train him. I'm just worried that together, the dogs will require all of your spare time.

Working from 5 to 10 pm 4 times a week is not bad. I think he is fine. As long as you do show him affection daily and take him out at least 4 times a week for a walk or run, he's happy! Dogs need their sleep too--they sleep for more hours a day than people do. If you can handle another puppy though, why not? It will make both of you happy!

to be honest, It would not make too much of a difference to your dogs happiness. he probably would be a little less bored with a companion, but puppies take up a lot of time and thats five hours four times a week that the new puppy would be left too. - toilet training would take longer for one thing (if they are not already trained).
I guess its up to you, do you think your dog is unhappy at the moment? He might actually be perfectly fine, in which case he wouldnt need a companion, unless you wanted another dog. If he is unhappy, is it fair to put another dog in the same position?

Back in the days before crate training (35 yrs. ago) I had a very active, lively pup who one day started to peel off the kitchen wall paper for me while I was at work. So having settled that she needed a companion because she was bored I got another female to keep her company. What I ended up with was the dynamic duo, what one didn't think of the other one did and together they created mayhem and chaos. We loved those pups, they were so much fun. Since then I've always had two dogs and with crates life is easier. So, yes it would be a good idea since you love dogs and can handle two. Good luck.

It would be up to you to determine whether or not you're ready for a puppy. Remember, 3 1/2 month old dogs need to be let out very frequently so you'll probably need a dog walker or pet sitter to come while you're at work.

I don't see why it would be a bad idea. You know what German Shepherds are like so you know how to take care of them. You've already met the pups and know that your dog gets along with them. It will give him someone to cuddle with or play with while you're at work. I say go for it.

If you feel bad about leaving one dog alone, how could you possibly justify getting another dog?
Chances are, your dog is JUST fine alone for 5 hours at a time (which is very minimal!). Dogs are very versatile, most dogs are happy just living with you, no matter how small the living quarters are, or what it takes.
