Marriage is NOT a religious event. It is a civil event. The government require a license to be issued and a state-appointed representative to swear the parties to the legal contract of marriage. It is a LEGAL event.
Only churches and temples turn it into a big hoo-rah religious thing.
No minister is required....no church, no prayers, no schmancy dress, no reception, no Mass.....only the swearing to the legality of the partnership.
To churches, it is a church or religious sacrament.
The government doesn't give a crap...other than the legally binding contract which has to do with inheritance and equal responsiblity laws.

A civil marriage is just as binding as a religious one. You can get married by a justice of the peace and it is a recognized, valid marriage.

Religious marriage is more binding if there is true love between couples because God is a witness. Civil marriage is more binding if marriage is just for mere convenience, that is to have, to enjoy and to keep.

There's nothing binding about a religious marriage. Nothing at all. There's really nothing binding about any relationship. It lasts as long as it last, as long as it works for everybody. The day it stops working is the day it's over.

The theory of "sacrament" marriage would invalidate any non-Christian marriages.
Let religion rule upon its own marriages, but let the state provide a civil union for any who wish to enter upon tax and inheritance breaks.

In the UK God is not a defined truth in law,so a civil marriage must therefore be as if not more valid than a church wedding...

The RC Church views ALL marriages as sacred.
So this means that if a Russian man married a Japanese woman in China (non-religious) ... got a divorce (through govt.) ... & I fell in love with the Russian ... ah, he'd be unavailable (to me, a RC) 'cause the RC Church teaches that he's still married in God's eye's.
