I have been trying to reprogram this television with a 'universal' converter. I follow the instructions for the converter but nothing happens. I also took out the batteries overnight ... it is supposed to clear the converter ... but that didn't seem to work either ... I need to get to the setup to change my TV back to cable since it was off cable for a while. Thanks.

I once read that if a remote control stops responding, take the batteries out, press every button once, put the batteries back in, and try again.

And for what it's worth, often a universal remote will be set to operate its own brand of equipment by default (Philips operates Philips right out of the package after adding the batteries, for example) so it seems reasonable that an RCA universal remote would be likely to operate an RCA television right out of the box after adding batteries and pressing the TV button. But your universal remote should work with one of the RCA TV codes, so be sure to try every code or to find a list at the manufacturer's website.

We're used to doing many things by remote control, and some things can be done only by remote control, but is there a Menu or Setup button on the front panel of the television? If not, are two of the buttons (both channel buttons or both volume buttons, for example) contained within brackets, implying that pressing them at the same time might cause a menu to display? If so, try it, and see which buttons navigate and which buttons select options.

It seems some of the RCA TVs had remotes that made it necessary to point the remote just below the television rather than directly at it. That might not be the case in your situation, though.

Good luck.

We have an RCA that is at least 15 yo and our remote stopped working at least 8 yrs ago. Since then, we have been buying the generic Phillips Universal Remote for it and they work right out of the package. They usually run about $10.

If you have a menu button on the front of the tv, push it until you see setup displayed.( use your ch up or down buttons scroll through the choices). Once you get to setup, look for antenna/cable then use your vol up or down to make the selection.
You can also try the codes for GE tvs as well.
