They do sell them separately (or at least each ring is a different price) because the quality of the diamond is where the big bucks come in. The center stone can be the same size but if it is a flawless D or a included H there is a major price swing. The setting is probably a standard price.
If you are seriously considering a tiffany ring let me give you some advice. I am assuming you are going to go to the Tiffany's in NYC. If so, skip it and go to an independent jeweler in the diamond district. They can custom make you the exact same ring, you'll get a better center stone and pay thousands less. Plus you'll get actual GIA paperwork - not Tiffany's paperwork. That is what my husband did and I love my ring. The only way someone would know it wasn't a tiffany ring is if they took the ring off my finger and looked on the inner band for the tiffany stamp.

I would recommend seeking out a local jeweler. If you live in a large city like NY or Philly there will be a jeweler/diamond district. Those are excellent places to go. The rings at Tiffany's are high quality, but the prices are higher than just the value of the ring. You are paying a premium for the Tiffany's name. You can find equal rings at many other stores. I remember seeing a study on ABC news that the diamond rings at Costco were actually the same quality as those at Tiffany's. The only thing about going to Costco is that you will get no service. You really have to know exactly what you want, because no one there can answer your questions and what you see in the case is all you can choose from. I would not recommend going to a chain store like Jared or Kay or Zales. They overcharge for substandard rings. A local store that has been in business for at least 10 years is probably your best compromise. You will receive excellent service, a high quality ring, and a reasonable price.

My guess after seeing the ring on the website is that the ring starts at $4200 with out a center stone. Most high end jewelry stores price their rings that way so that you can choose the center stone that you want. Some people may want a flawless stone and others are very happy with a VS2 stone. Yuo will pay a premium at Tiffany's. Their stones are top quality and they have branded their store very well. Some of the price will indeed be paying for the reputation of Tiffany's. You should search other manufacturers, you may be able to find a similar ring for a lot less.

When my fiance and I were choosing my ring, we went in to Tiffany to try on rings. The salesperson there told me that Tiffany diamonds are not sold separately from Tiffany settings. The opinion of Tiffany is that they don't want you designing your piece of jewelery yourself -- they are a high-end designer and have perfectly crafted each setting to match each stone. Now, that doesn't mean you can't pick out different sizes or qualities of diamond for the center stone. If you go into Tiffany, they should have several Legacy rings available for different prices depending on the color, cut, clarity, and carat weight of the center stone. (That is why their website says "starting at $4200".)
Here is what the website says:
"Look closely. Every Tiffany setting is beautifully
customized to accommodate the size and shape
of the individual diamond.
"Tiffany strongly cautions against the practice
of “building your own ring.” These designs
often sacrifice beauty and produce a ring with
disappointing aesthetics. Each of Tiffany’s many
and varied ring styles is the product of decades
of study and hours of careful craftsmanship."

First off I am not a fan of Tiffany's. You are paying for a name and not the item. Very overpriced IMHO. I always tell others to go to priscope or sites like that to look into styles and such. 1 thing to keep in mind that the most important C is cut so pay special attention to that. If you are looking online I would suggest whiteflash but that is just my opinion

I believe they are sold seperatly....That's why when you're on the tiffany's website and you click on a ring it says "Price starting at _________" because you can choose a flawless diamond which would be more expensive than another diamond lower in grade. They allow you to pick from different diamonds so usually the price of the ring is more than the price on the website...
Congrats!

Most high end retailers sell the stones separate from the settings. They have great sales associates who will help you control the price by selecting a diamond that is in your price budget. Congrats! And woo hoo to Tiffany's!!

Most high end engagement rings are sold with the center stone and the setting separately. This allows you to control the price and the size of your stone. This is only for high end stores, not places like Zales or Kays, etc. They'll place the center stone in the ring, though. It only takes a few minutes.
