I've been to MANY weddings. I've seen mother's of the bride and groom wear nice pants suits. It was fine, there were no comments under the breath talking about it... in fact, I personally complimented my friend's mother in her suit because it was so beautiful and unique. It also gave her a very sophisticated look which was nice. In today's society, there is no formal tradition anymore. Make your own traditions. Do what you want and what makes you and your family comfortable.

RE:
Mother of the bride....is it okay to wear pants to the wedding?
My mom found a beautiful pant suit at the mall recently, and thinks she would like to wear it for my January wedding. Now that it is in her hands, she is wondering if it is proper to wear pants? Or should she find a long dress or gown?
I personally don't care one way or the other, as long...

I'm not the most formal of people, nor am I the most traditional (I have come to realize this after reading so many of these posts), however, I feel that if she's found a beautiful pantsuit that she's in love with, why not wear that to the wedding? Especially since you don't have a problem with it. I've actually seen some gorgeous pant-sets that put dresses/skirt-sets to shame! Tell her to wear what makes her happy, and to be beautiful and glamorous in the process.
Congrats and best of luck in January.

The pants shouldn't be a big issue. If she's comfortable wearing pants than it is alright. If she feels that she might stick out or something then to be safe probably go with a dress. It really depends on her personal preferrence. Of course, if you are okay with it since it's your wedding then that really settles it. Believe me when I say regardless of what the groom says, it's what the bride says that counts. I know from experience. 8^D

There is no protocol to what the mothers should or should not wear to the wedding. And, because you don't care, makes it even more okay that she wears the pant suit.
When my mom first told me she was wearing a pant suit to my wedding, I was livid. but after I saw it, and how comfortable it made her, I was completely okay with it. You being happy on that day is all that matters. and if her wearing a pant suit doesn't bother you, then that is what she should wear.

Hah... I've been putting some thought into that too!! In the 20 years of my existence, I've never seen my mom in a skirt, gown, or dress since the day she married my father!!
At her stepson's wedding, she wore a really nice pant suit. If she's happy with how it looks on her, and she feels confident for people to look at her in it, then there's no problem.
If it was jeans, then maybe that'd be bad...... pant suit are fine and dandy!
GOOD LUCK!

I think that it is okay to wear pants to a wedding as long as it is formal. I have heard or read cannot remember that you should not wear black to a wedding unless the time of the wedding is after 5:00p.m. Just thought I would let you know. Probably nobody would care though. Have a good time at the wedding..

Yes, it is perfectly okay to wear a pantsuit! A lot of the bridal wear companies that off mother-of-the-bride attire do offer pants outfits as an option. (So that means, not only is it okay, it is becoming traditional.)
And if one wants to wear a pantsuit to a wedding, a semi-formal winter wedding would be the perfect place to do it!

It's perfectly appropiate since the wedding is semi-formal. If it's a formal pant suit that she loves and she looks stunning, then go for it!
Good luck

If you're okay with it, then have her wear it! As long as she is comfortable and you don't mind then I wouldn't see a problem with it!!
I know my mother would be more comfortable in a pant suite then dress!!
