Men who are not fundamentally (if that is the right word) gay have historically quenched their sexual needs with other men where no females are present over long periods of time.
It happens with migrant workers, prisoners (of war as well as law breakers), soldiers in the field, sailors at sea or any other venue where men are together and cut off from women.
Certainly Richard the First of England ( who led the 2nd Crusade) was a known homosexual, and he had plenty of friends. He was called "The Lion-Hearted" but more aptly the lion-harded.
The European Officer corps, especially the pre-World War One German corps was filled with them. On the "Night of the Long Knives," when Hitler extinguished the S.A., he found Rohm, their leader in bed with a fourteen-year-old boy. It was true of Englishmen also who used to be sent to all-boy boarding schools where they passed puberty cut off from contact with the gentler sex.
Gay crusaders? Sure, in emergency situations. But they returned to the hetero life when they got back to the soft flesh of home.
