It means that (gasp!) some people aren't "brainwashed" into thinking that all things Christian are evil. Many songs in the public domain, as I'm sure this one is, started out as Christian or religious in nature. Are they telling her to go to church? Doubt it. Are they saying that the song is true? Doubt it. If they treat it as a song, just a song, then no lines have been crossed. If it makes a few Christian students happy along the way, yay for them.
Have a great day!

If this is a public school then the school should not be trying to push religion on kids. This is a common tactic used by people to recruit others into religion. Target the children while they are at an impressionable age. Voice your concerns to the school. Keep a journal of who you talk to and when. Note what they tell you and note what actions you have seen taken.
If the school keeps doing this then contact the ACLU in your state and see what their advice is.
There is no reason why the school has to teach this song. There are plenty of songs out there that are not religious. If the school insists on teaching this one then they are doing it for religious purposes and not educational ones.

1. yes, the song is often sung by groups of kids in a church.
2. did you know all schooling as you see it today started out as bible studies? look it up.
3. did you know our college system was founded as a bible teaching as well? Harvard, the top school, was started as one, same with Yale and many others.
This idea that people are putting the bible into schools is false. Its been there since the birth of our school system. The problem is, its been removed too much. Just look at the kids of every generation to see that reality. The more they remove, the more wild and wicked the kids become.

Depending on the lyrics used, it is marginally religious to Christian.
If only the non-christian lyrics are used the kids will probably think of it literally as a light, like a flashlight. Or it could be their shining smile. If other words are used it is clearly a soul and therefore religious.

It is sung in churches --- since I think it comes from Jesus telling the people to let their light shine, not to hide it.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and out it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven.’ Matthew 5: 15-16
However, that said, I don't think it has it's likely to 'indoctrinate' children. I don't think most people would get upset over the golden rule in a song (treating others as we'd like to be treated) --- but that's straight out of the Bible, you know what I mean? I mean the Lord's Word does its job, and this is from His Word. But it's not like the song talks about Jesus or God.
That said, whenever my husband and I read these scriptures, I start singing the song. So ... maybe ... ;)

This "Little Light" is meant to represent the young person's faith in JC/God. I used to sing this in Sunday School as a kid.
If your child learned this in a public school, and you are offended by this obvious crossing-the-line of church/state separation, then you should let other parents, the PTA, the Schoolboard, and your municipal, state, federal representatives know.

but what words is she learning?! there are secular and non-secular. it's basically & simply telling the child to be happy, joy filled and share that glorious feeling with evertone around! almost all children are afraid of the dark so -- he the light and make someone's day.

It is just a song. If you are concerned that it is somehow harmful for your child to sing this song then maybe you sould talk to the teacher. Are you going to let her participate in the Christmas party? Or does that offend you too? Did you let her participate in the Halloween party?
