Go to Toys-R-Us and buy the game "Mousetrap" (that is, if they still make the game).

Mousetrap is (was?) the quintessential Rube Goldberg machine.

It seems to me the point of a Rube Goldberg devices IS the fuss. That said, if you are looking to make one, you may want to try using kid's toys and building blocks - Lego makes small sets with moving parts and motors (look for builder sets) and KNex makes good "roller coaster" sets with weighted balls or cars, and tracks that are easily customizable and can be used as parts in your machine. Plan out the device on a computer, what the ultimate goal is, (ie, flipping a light switch) and work backwards from there. Also be sure to update us with the youtube URL when you film it all!
