There is a stray cat ( a family of three actually ) And this sweet one we want to take in.... Well, a couple days ago, my boyfriend saw it and it looked like it had a broken leg, i went to find it and it disappeared... we thought it had died..Well I saw it today, and it's back leg is just flopping, the poor thing... Do you imagine it is just a partial break, rather than shattered? Any tips for knowing what type of break it is? We are looking into vets to see which ones will not cost too much, hopefully we can find a generous vet...

can it survive outside with a broken leg just hanging there?

Hey everyone, just thought I'd let you know, I got the kitty to the vet (after searching for one that wasn't too terribly expensive.. the first one I called, referred to by a friend, would have cost me $500 to $600!!!).. They could have pinned it, which would have cost quite a bit, but they weren't sure it would have feeling back in it's leg at all, so she has to get her leg amputated tomorrow. Poor thing, but at least she won't have a floppy leg anymore! We are taking the sweet little thing in and keeping her as our own, tripod and all! :)

They'll have to amputate it! It's been too long without treatment and if it's flopping, it's a BAD break.
However, three legged cats survive just fine but you can NEVER let it back outside!!! I have a three legged cat that broke his back left leg before he was a year old. It was either $5000 or orthopedic surgery and no guarantees it would work or $750 Amputation (which is what would happen if the $5000 orthopedic surgery didn't work) We chose the $750....and that was a deal from our vet. The only other "cheap" option is to put the cat out of his misery and have him put to sleep! If he's so used to be outside then he may never adjust to being an indoor cat either.

Hard to say without seeing it. Clearly she can't put weight on it. Also the injury could have been complicated by the fact that she's been on her own for this time. (Not your fault.)

I'd say, try not to worry in advance. What's done is done. Tonight you will have her to a vet and that is what is important.

One other thought: I have a cat who (prior to being adopted by me) had a badly broken back leg amputated. He gets around just fine though. Only bringing this up IN CASE this break is that bad.

Good luck to you and the cat. You're doing a very good thing here.

It sounds very serious if the leg is "just flopping". If it weren't so serious he would just be limping. It seems he might have been hit by a cat and will lose the leg.

The cat must be in awful pain. Please, whatever it takes, get some relief for him as soon as possible.

No, it won't survive without treatment. It may have to lose the leg, but if you plan to keep it, he should be just fine indoors-only. I've known quite a few 3-legged cats. They adapt very well. =)

My cat came home with a broken leg once- compound fracture no less.. But after having a pin in there for several weeks for good repair, he is perfectly normal!
It must be repaired or it will be miserably sick and die.

Well, it sounds pretty serious but cat's can be perfectly happy with 3 legs if the leg isn't fixable. I hope you can get her and take her in, poor thing!
