Cats purr when they are happy and also when they are in pain or distress to comfort themselves. I expect you make a fuss and stroke your cat when you have been away so he is naturally happy and he probably going to get fed or let out.

Ever? Always! My cats always purr and meow at me when I get home. And it isn't because they're hungry because their bowls stay full. I work from home so I always have at least one cat next to me while I work. They also completely adore my boyfriend. One will hop up behind him on the futon and law with a leg outstretched and a paw on his shoulder. Another will hop up on his lap and kiss his hand till he pets her :)

It's the equivalent of a dog wagging its tail. The cat is happy to see you. You'll note that she also purrs when you're stroking it or any other time it's happy.

Because it knows that you will feed it. Trust me I once had 13 of them. They also purr if they want some attention while pawing your favourite bit of furniture or your favourite jumper . Don't be fooled. The mice may have designed the Earth (see Douglas Adams) but it is the cat who will inherit it.
Remember those cute furry animals are plotting our downfall.

That is a sign of a very happy and healthy cat and
they are happy that you are home and they would like to have you sit down so they can climb on your lap so you can pet them!

I like girlie's statement, purring is like a dog wagging it's tail, I know cats get bad press.. they are lovely animals and I can't have one now, because we spend a lot of time in the US and it isn't fair to put them in catteries for a month or two.. I have nothing against dogs, but I really like cats.. forget the cat haters that put answers to you... cats are just to die for... and they do love, in their own way..

They have missed you and they love you because you feed them and look after them. It's called showing affection.
Cats are living things with emotions, just like all other pets. They are part of the family. Pets are not inanimate objects, like T.V or PlayStation.
