Well they might have a reason not to believe in flea shots - flea shots only sterilise fleas, they are not a complete treatment, they're only a preventative.
How about you try dazzling your parents with your amazing knowledge. Tell them all about Frontline, which is fabulous at keeping fleas away - tell them it contains the chemical Fipronil, it stays on the skin of the animal because the lipid layer of the skin acts as a barrier to stop the product going internally - so it's very safe, as well as effective! How's that for impressive!
Obviously dogs can be toilet trained, don't your parents know anyone with dogs? It's just like with a child, they may have 'accidents' when they're pups, but by the time they're grown they will only go outside.
I'm afraid though if you can't convince your parents, you really can't keep a dog just outside, it's not fair on them. You might have to wait until you move out to get a dog, I have to!!

Some dogs are fine outside, such as working dogs (farm/ranch dogs, guard dogs), as long as they are provided with proper shelter, food and water. But for the life of me, I don't understand how people that want dogs as pets can leave them tied up outside.
I don't know how old you are, and although you sound quite willing to take on the responsibility, in spite of your best intentions, you're parents will probably have to take care of the dog sometimes.
Honestly, I'm not sure what your parents are thinking. Even having an outside dog is a BIG responsibility. And it seems that they are unwilling to take on the level of work required to raise a dog. It's a big commitment, day and night, rain or shine. And unless you have their full support, it's really not fair to put a dog in that situation.
Maybe as a compromise, you can get a smaller animal first(cat or rabbit perhaps). Then when you've shown them that you can take care of that animal, you will be able to convince them to get an inside dog.
Good luck.

It sounds like you should wait to get a dog until you are living on your own. In my opinion, dogs absolutely do not belong outdoors. Why even get a dog if that's the case, especially if you live in an area that gets really cold/hot.
Also, your parents are probably correct in the assumption that they will have to do some if not most of the clean up. I don't know how old you are but the fact is, that the dog usually ends up being the parents responsibility.
I think it is great that you want a dog, and they are wonderful, but it sounds like your parents are not into it so you should wait until you are an adult. Sorry!

Don't. Dogs are social animals. Living external by and large denies them the socialization they NEED to increase. A backyard isn't ample for a puppy. Playing with a puppy for a couple of hours an afternoon is not going to exchange the socialization it demands at all times.

Some dog breeds require being outdoors more then indoors..like husky's for example they love being outside, running around. I have a husky and she'd rather be outside then inside. However in really cold and hot temperature its best to keep them indoors. Maybe get your parents to take you to a shelter or a humaine society and look at the already loving house broken dogs. That might give them a change of heart. Jsut tell them you wnat to go down and look with them, but not force the "I want" factor. Say something like " I want you guys to come look at some older housebroken dogs at the humaine society with me, just to look" The good news about getting a dog from them is they most likely will ahve all their shots. Vet care is still needed but taht first bit is taking care of. Good luck.

if your parents are that..unique ...i'd wait until you have your own place...no flea shots?? that's not right. or you can rescue a dog thats already housetrained? But still he would need vet care and vaccines.
dont get a dog under those conditions for the dogs sake, please. If he gets infested with fleas, the fleas will get on you, then get in the house anyway. And animal control will take your dog away (because dogs can and do die from fleas left untreated) and imo..no dog should be outdoors alone all the time..

Please do not get a dog only to leave him or her tied outdoors, alone and cold. Dogs are very social and they need a human family who will include them in everyday life. Dogs do not belong outdoors. It is cruel to leave a dog outside regardless of basic care. You sound like a smart person because you know this is wrong. Do not be selfish and put a dog through something avoidable just because you want a dog. Please show your love of animals through volunteering at a shelter for now. When you have your own place, you can have as many dogs as you like!

I know you really really want a dog but your parents clearly aren't willing to accept responsibility and, like it or not, they are the ones who are ultimately responsible. (They'll be the ones stuck with the vet bills, the ones stuck with the dog while you're out on trips and sleepovers, the ones stuck with the dog when you're sulking in your room and refuse to walk it). If you somehow manage to convince them to get you a dog, under the circumstances you've described, you would be negligent owners at best. I'm sorry, I know it sucks, but you need to put aside your wants and think of the needs of the animal. That is the NUMBER ONE aspect of pet ownership. I'm 19 years old and after 10 years of our family having dogs, I have my own dog and she is 100% my responsibility. I have classes that start at 1 PM, but guess what, I still need to wake up at 7 AM every day to let her out. I need to walk her when it's cold, rainy, and when I've just sat down in my PJs to watch my favorite show. I've spent easily $500 on vet bills and I've only had her since September. Dogs are like furry babies, and kids are not able, financially or emotionally, to take on the responsibility without the full support and help of their parents.

There is no excuse and you don't need a dog. You need to grow up, get a job and earn a living and get your own place and then you can take on the responsibilities of owning a dog. It is THEIR house and regardless of what you impulsively want, that is the fact. Don't subject some poor dog to living in an environment it is not entirely wanted -- stop being selfish and just wanting what you want and realize how cruel that would be to the dog.

I would not have a dog if I had to put it outdoors ! I have a Dachshund that shares my house with my wife, 4 kids, and I. I could not imagine putting him out in the cold. He is almost like my 5th child. Nothing on earth makes me any madder than for someone to get a dog , put it on a chain , never play with it , then call it stupid ! Dogs are like people, If you don't teach them then they will not know anything.
