It has been said that warming the milk releases the naturally occuring tryptophan that exists in milk. (This is the same tryptophan that makes people tired on Thanksgiving day from eating so much turkey.) However, research has been done to negate this theory.
Some people swear by this remedy (it works for me), but others don't see any improvement.

I don't think it's the milk that makes you sleepy - it's the warm. Anything hot will warm up your body making you feel toasty inside - a great feeling to encourage sleep!

It's not that it has a drug-like effect or anything, it's just that it's warm and soothing.
It does seem to help relax you.

Tryptophan.

It helps with falling asleep - it's also in Turkey, so you can expect a relaxed feeling after Thanksgiving too!

I have no idea. I can't think of a more disgusting thing to do. The though of putting the milk from another animal into my body makes me gag, besides the fact that our bodies do not product the enzyme that digests milk. And the way milk is produced; chemicals, drugs, filth, infections, yuck. Try www.notmilk.com

warm milk soothes the stomach and releases endorphines, sort of like the same thing eating turkey does for you...it causes the body to release chemicals that cause you to relax.

It helps soothe tummies. there is no chemical process in the heating. It just plainly makes you feel warm and comforting.
