I'm moving near Ft Meade, MD in March and wondered what it was like. Is the weather nice?... is it a high crime area?..is it expensive to live there?..and on that subject, are there any quiet towns near there that are fairly nice, have low crime and have decent living expenses?

As for 'decent' living expenses, I am moving from Monterey CA so it's pretty pricey here. What would you compare that are of MD to?

No, I'm not working on base...just moving near there and knew it would be a good point of reference.
Besides, even if I were, I doubt the government would take issue with me knowing what Maryland's like.

It depends what you are looking for. Columbia is for folks who want the local goverment to be able to decide everything, including what color you can paint your house! PG County has high crime in many areas, and the schools are bad!
There are some nice areas in Anne Arundel county (home of Fort Meade), and some real problem areas! Millersville is fairly nice, as it the Gambrills area. Crofton is not bad, but it is starting to get the DC spillover also! Severna Park is nice, but a bit pricey!
Traffic in the area is a problem. If you are commuting, expect to sit in stop and go traffic, it is just a fact of life! Taxes are bad, and will be worse due to the latest round of tax increases pushed through by the Boy Govenor.
Crime is a problem. Try to stay away from light rail and major transit lines such as the DC Metro, as the inner city knuckleheads (from DC and Baltimore) use that to come out to the suburbs to steal cars, shoplift and rob people.
The cost of housing is high! To get into a better area, you will end up paying a serious premium. For example, a home in Crofton (AA county) is worth $75,000-$125,000 more than the exact same home, built by the same builder, in Bowie (PG county).
Welcome to the People's Rebublic of Maryland!

The area around Fort Meade is not too good or too bad. It is lower middle class with a high percentage of African-Americans. Crime rate is kind of high. Not too expensive sepecially when compared with Monterey.
Laurel is the nearest town and it is just so-so. Fairly decent mall. All of the usual restaurants like Olive Garden, Appplebee's, and a couple of real nice ones like Bottom of the Bay (excellent seafood) and Red Hot and Blue (barbeque).
Prince George County is not a good school system at all. Lots of the crime from Washington DC is spilling over to PG County.
The best weather is the Spring and Fall. Downright gorgeous for both. Winter is usually damp drizzly and around the high 30's. Summer is hot, hazy, and humid. 95 degrees with 90 percent humidity is not uncommon for days at a time.
I personally think that Columbia, Maryland is a nice place. It is in Howard County not too far from Ft. Meade area. Get some real estate agents from big companies like Century 21 or Remax to do some research for you.

funny, we just PCSd from Monterey to Ft Meade last March.
depending on where exactly you are stationed( the Ft, NSA, pentagon or Suitland, for instance) will depend on where you want to live, cuz the commute SUCKS.
I live in Columbia. the day we moved in, there was a murder across the street, and a month later, another one in the apartment complex(same person arrested for both). we are looking for homes in Anne Arundal county, Millersville and Pasadena. DH must commute to the Pentagon and Suitland frequently so that gives him about an hour commute to anywhere. don't expect to find ANYTHING under $325K in a decent neighborhood, and the best ones will easily be half a million.
Traffic bites and you will spend a LOT of money on gas. currently runs $3-ish.
weather: hot and humid in the summer, cold and damp in the winter. but close to DC and the Mall.

As others have said, Columbia is about your best bet. Savage, Odenton, or Laurel might not be that good anymore. It is actually a pretty short commute from Columbia to Ft. Meade as commutes go in that area. BTW, $1300 is not going to get you much.
