A passport is simply a document that allows you into countries that require one. For example entry into Canada will require a passport soon.
You would need a special photograph called a passport photo. Call around to local photography studios to see if they do passport photos (somewhere that does budget photos would be your best and cheapest bet- like Walmart or Penny's) They aren't cheap. You will need a minimum of 2.
Then go to the post office, they will have the necessary forms, you will probably need a copy of your birth certificate, call post office and ask. They will help you fill them out if needed. Expect to wait up to six weeks and pay around $80, at least as of last summer.
Passports also make excellent forms of I.D.
So, start6 early, have fun when or if you go.
Oh, are you U.S. or U.K. ? Directions are for U.S.

A passport has two functions- to prove your identity and to prove your citizenship.

You need to prove to Immigration *who* you are and that you have a right to be in the USA. Similar issues are there when you go to another country. Whether you drive to USA-friendly Canada or fly to USA-unfriendly countries, everyone wants to know who you are and what your nationality is.

No one has told you about the Post Office. They have clerks who process passports all the time. The prices vary depending on how fast you want your passport. Visit your Post Office for more info.

BTW, the US Department of State's Passport Agency is the government office that handles passports. The site below is way optomistic about the two weeks it takes. Think a few months and you'll be happier.

A passport is used for traveling to a foreign country. You can apply for one at the Post Office. You have to do it at least 3 months before you leave to travel to other countries.

Ok, a passport is so that you can leave and return to the country. You will need to take your birth cert. to your local town hall or passport center. Its about $100 (plus a picture charge) they will take your birth cert... then in a few weeks you will get your birth cert and your passport in the mail. As of Jan 1 of 2008 you will need a passport to travel out of the country by land or air. Currently it is just by air and you can travel by sea until that date with out a passport. You are going to want one if you plan to travel. Good luck.

A passport is used for those who want to travel outside of the united states. I think you can get one at the Dept. Of Transportation. Or at least you can call them, and they should be able to tell you where to get one, and probably be able to explain exactly how it works.
