I'm an atheist. I've been married twice. Both of the women I married claimed to believe in God and said they were Christian. Both of them cheated on me with other men who also claimed to believe in God.

The woman I am presently seeing is Catholic, and has twice had romantic relationships in the past with married men. I've never cheated, and none of the atheists I know have cheated either. But several of my "God fearing" friends have had affairs. I've also noted that my atheist friends lie less, & are more forgiving and tolerant of other people's choices and lifestyles.

This is not to say that I don't know Christians who struggle daily to remain true to their faith. But why should it be such a struggle?

In short, I don't generally use anectdotal evidence to formulate general opinions, but it seems to me that the ideals of Christianity tend to be more easily followed by people who don't believe in God. Has anybody else noticed this?

Ok...this is the thing! When you are pent down and repressed as most religious people often are, mentally you feel deprived. And as often happens to people who aren't getting enough, you become depraved. You can see this with the Mormons who claim to have a higher link to wholesomeness, but marry off their young girls to old men. Or take the example in the Bible (several times) where people who are terrible toward others get blessed with new names and lives and power from God!

I am not saying all Christians are pervs, or that all Catholics are demonic. I am simply saying that when your mind is bogged down with what others think is correct manner, (taken from a book that is constantly misinterpreted) you are bound to be a little hypocritical.

Most atheist have higher moral standards, because they are not constrained by being horribly punished, should they partake of something seen as not correct; whereas Christians are constantly being told they will be PUNISHED... think of a 14 year old who finally gets freedom from an overbearing parent. The first opportunity they have, they will be something bad, just to feel alittle freedom...

I havent noticed it but maybe theres just alot more Christians around and fewer atheists so the "sinning" seems more common. How interesting you keep having relationships with "Christians" while you are an atheist. Looks like you've just run into people who might do the talk and have a harder time doing the walk of their beliefs. The forbidden fruit is very tempting and nobody is perfect. Maybe the atheists are getting it right because they dont have to prove anything to anyone and are just living the best way they can without hurting anyone since unconsiously their true loving spiritual self comes thru even if they don't acknowledge or remember that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience. Anyway, Jesus was particularly compassionate towards "sinners" because they need the most help cuz they are probably feeling guilty & hypocritical enough and condemmed/judged by their fellow man already. Its so much easier if there are no expectations, no pressure to deal with. Just my take.

You know, it is really strange that you say that because now that I think about it... I have the same experience. My friends that are very religious have cheated SEVERAL times. I am agnostic and could not cheat at all. All of my agnostic, atheist friends have the same mentality. Perhaps it has something to do with the way we think about life and what is right and wrong.

I also agree with being more accepting this is SO true. But at the same time are we more accepting to very religious people...

to me it is as simple as this. If you think about it. not just blindly believe you have earned my respect and you are less likely to do things that are wrong. Because you know what you are believing in and what you are doing. You know why things are right and wrong. You are not just following a set of rules.

Is fear of sin tantalizing in some way? Like if you can't have it you want it more? If you have to make up your own mind about god, the universe what is wrong and what is right are you more likely to do good?

Very thought provoking. great question.

If they did as you say then they must not be true believers or they are just using the religion that there family believes in and don't really believe in it themselves but everyone makes mistakes and some are intentional but in the whole of things this kind of thing happens in every religion everyone falls into temptation I am a Christian Nondenominational and I am sorry for the wrongs that have been done to you and may God Bless you and keep you safe from more wemon like that.

People who look for the bad in people are going to find it. In the same sense just because people label themselves with a certain label doesn't necessarily mean they are who they say they are.

I am a Christian and I know some Atheists that are very nice. Do I agree with what they believe? No. On the other hand, I know Atheists that are just complete asssholes.

As for your conclusions, again I say people see what they want to see.

I am Christian and I think u just didnt find the right women. U know when I was in the USA (if are from there) I noticed that people divorse really often and that they are all cheating each other. I think it's up to the person not the religion. And the moral of course.

well, it depends on which person your looking at. Some people just claim to be Christians, maybe it's a family tradition or whatever. But you can't see that they are christian. Some people say that they are Christians and they are, because you can tell by their personality. So you see the difference. If someone says their christian and don't act like it, it doesn't mean that not all Christians are like that.

Of course they are awful Christians. They do bad things to other people, ask the priest to forgive them and think they're square... They often believe they are right with God even though they do awful things to other people. They look for forgiveness in the eyes of god as opposed to the people they've harmed.

Yes, you are right. People are not made to be bound by rules that go against their very nature. We are animals, maybe better dressed and opposable thumbs and all, but animals still. It is in our instinct to eat, drink, poop, and screw to procreate. If you tell people they cannot do these things, or limit them with some "moral" restriction, they will eventually revolt and run towards the thing the desire most and have been deprived of.

Of course, atheists are more virtuous because it comes from within, not based some old myths written thousands of years ago by desert tribesman. We have to think about our ethics and come to understand our place in the world. Christians are TOLD how to act, so in a very real sense, they have on ownership over them.
