There is no such thing as an assumed name. The "Elder", on the name tag, is a title identifying their priesthood office, being elders in the Melchizedek Priesthood. The surname is their real surname. There is nothing assumed or fake. Respect their name and their position. They have a ministerial certificate from the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are called to minister the Gospel to all the world, where ever they may be directed.

"Elder" or "Sister" are titles, not names. What follows is the missionary's actual last name.

Why do doctors assume the name "Dr."? Is it some kind of cult!?

Mormon missionaries do not use assumed names on their name tags. It is their real names. The male missionaries have their priesthood title in front of their names, ie "Elder" and female missionaries have the term "Sister" in front of their names on their tags.

But their name is their real name.

Do they? I don't think it is assuming to be called Brother John or Elder John. Perhaps they have organizational meanings for these.

They don't use assumed names. Elder/Sister is used because they are on the Lord's work and not on some joy ride or vacation.

Assumed names or titles?? Don't you call your Paster "Paster so and so"? Guess every pastor should change their first name along with every priest, deacon, apostle and prophet.
