That's the theory described in "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross" by John Allegro, which argues that Jesus was not a man but a hallucinogenic mushroom, Amanita muscaria; that the New Testament was concocted by addicts of the mushroom as a code for their mystical lore; and that the God of Jews and Christians is ultimately nothing more than a magnificent phallic symbol.

Yup. See 'The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross', by John M. Allegro - a senior member of the Dead Sea Scrolls translation team.

It sounds deranged, until you see the etymological roots of his theory. As one able to read all the documents of the time in their original language, he has a unique take on the whole thing.

Consider the 'Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil'. There are ancient paintings of Adam and Eve in a garden with an Amanita Muscaria 'tree'.

The idea of eating Jesus' body during mass becomes a lot easier to understand if Jesus was actually a code for a mushroom.

Fascinating stuff.
