I know there's a way to stop the big inviting button in the middle of the set working, so the TV can only be turned off/on from the remote...
but I can't find the instructions

Go into the menu - I have a samsung. Back later. ok on your remote you should have a button called D.MENU. Click on that and scroll down to the 3rd choice (which is a cog wheel).

You will then see Parental lock appear on the right hand side.
Right click over and down to that and right click again.
You should now see - enter PIN code. Do so (write it down somewhere) and your TV will be fully locked. Phew.
PM me if you need help.
Thats the only way I can find even with my manual in front of me.

Sounds like your back lighting is shot. LCD work by making colored dots on a white light background. If under warranty make arrangements to send it to get it fixed. Otherwise take it to a repair shop. If it's florescent back light it shouldn't be that much to fix.

Throw it in the garbage. That's what I did with my Samsung.
