A homeless man runs out of cigarettes. He looks for cigarette butts since he knows that he can make one new cigarette out of every three butts. He picks up nine butts. If he smokes one cigarette per hour, how many hours can he smoke for?

he cant even smoke for one hour.. assuming he gets 4 cigarettes (9 butts, plus 3 more when hes done with those makes 4)

Each cigarette will last him a bout 5 minutes or so, so his total would only be about 20 minutes worth of smoking... over the course of 4 hours of course, but you asked "how many hours can he smoke for"

4, he has 9 butts which make 3 cigs. He smokes those and has three butts which make 1 cig. 3+1=4. But technically he could smoke for however long he wants. Because it doesn't take 1 hour to smoke a cig, and you're saying that he smokes 1 an hour. The answer would be 4 if you asked how many cigs he could smoke. My answer is he can smoke for however long he wants.
