There's a good chance that they're in pain, which tends to make anyone irritable. Or maybe they've had such disappointing lives that they're bitter in general, or in some cases, they're angry with nature and their own bodies for letting them down so that they need help. But bless you for whatever you try to do! Just remember that, even if you have to treat them like children in some ways, you should still show them the respect due their age.

Why Are Old People Mean

During a shift change at work, we announced to our customers we were about to change shifts. We always do this because it takes about ten minutes or so. People usually then make a few transactions so we can get started.

After we had started, and subsequently let our incoming customers know it would be a few minutes, a blue-hair came frowning forward, a fistful of tickets to be cashed in. She demanded to know how much longer this was going to take. I immediately replied, "Four to seven and a half minutes." I didn't even break stride in counting the till as I said it. For some reason, she got all huffy and left.

It was pretty funny. Some of the regulars got a kick out of it. Grumpy old bat, anyway.

It depends on the person. Some older people are really nice, some are really mean. For you to say that it sounds like you haven't met enough older people. Show them respect, look them in the face, be polite, act happy to see them and have patience with them.

Anytime you deal with the public you need to have a thick skin. Don't take stuff personally, treat everyone like they are the first person of the day and how you would want to be treated and try to make it fun. If you talk with people, make a joke or compliment them on something I think you'll find that they will warm up to you.

Good luck.

Not all of them are. The ones I met and helped always turned up to be real sweet and cute, and I always give them a nice smile when I help them, so maybe that helped. I guess old people are naturally cranky, cos they have so much health problem and aching bones all over. I mean, I've been sick or have back before too, and I'm cranky and moody as well. Maybe I'm gonna be like them at their age? I donno.

In some cases, they may feel frustrated that they can't do it themselves (how you feel if you're sick or really tired) and therefore can't do it exactly "their" way. People who have been independent all their lives are often annoyed at themselves when they have to ask others for assistance---they are not aggravated at you, just irritated at the situation. In other cases, they may be dealing with chronic pain or fatigue, which can cause a fuzzy mind and irritation to the point they have trouble concentrating on etiquette. Of course, some people have been mean their whole lives...why change now?

Number of reasons, dementia, alzheimers, they are going through great bodily pain, lonelieness, or just wanting to talk to someone so they just sound mean.

Help them the best you can--however if it's abuse or accusatory things like you taking $$ or things, I would stay away from that elder or family member and keep mum

I know what you are talking about. I've seen it time and time again in hospital settings between the patient and the healthcare worker. I believe the reason to be for their $%&y attitude is that their lives had not been fulfilling/ good.

Most elderly people I helped were kind and patient. I did come across a few mean ones.

Don't be offended by them. They can just be cranky at that age. If you keep on helping them the best you can, eventually they'll become nicer.
