No,
This has been a problem for a long time, especially in the border states. In 1986 the solution by non other than Ted, don't ride in my car without a flotation dvice, Kennedy was to grant amnesty to all. Ted PROMISED he would never do it again. He promised to secure the borders. Ted must buy all of his votes.
In 1994 California passed, by a landslide, prop 187. Prop 187 would have denied benefits to illegals. That bill was subverted by a Liberal judge. One man subverts the will and desire of millions.

Illegal immigration has been a concern for a long time and for a long time our political elites have been forcing their will upon the people instead of vice versa.

yeah...a WHOLE damn country didnt either. I lived on the border though so like 15 years back we heard everyday what most of the US just heard last year. But the media has spread the hate even in other countries where people still immigrate only proving that the media is the only why we hate. They make us do it. Do I have a lawsuit?

It sprung out of Mexico? You people are retards. It came apparant after the 9/11 incident which should be blamed on American workers for not doing their job effectively. And when did it become a "serious" problem to have immigrants pick what you eat at the buffet? I hope your kids starve to death when Americans start doing the job and you get to pay 20 bucks per apple in the future.

Along with what the others have said I also feel that the biggest component has been that Americans are finally becoming educated on the subject.

The media and most politicians have tried for years (and are still trying) to sell the notion of the poor, simple, hard-working undocumented laborer. Now Americans are learning that that laborer is taking a job from a tax-paying American, driving down wages for the rest of us, taking taxpayer provided services while paying little in taxes and even complaining that they aren't granted citizenship. And then we are learning about the millions who do not work, who commit all kinds of crime and then slip back across the border and who victimize Americans.

Smart Americans are finally seeing that it costs ALL of us in a lowering of care at our hospitals, fewer services for OUR own disadvantaged citizens, a lessening in education dollars for OUR LEGAL children and a lowering in standard of living for all but the very wealthy.

The idea of it being the problem that it is being protrayed as has only come into being in the last few years (since 9/11). The numbers are not much different now than they have been, yet only since that date the atention has far, FAR out stripped the actual relevance of the issue.

It might seem that way to you but many of us have been dealing with it for years. It is in the news more now that before. Also the illegals marching and demanding rights has stirred up people who had not realized the extent of the problem til then. Maybe we should thank them for bringing it to the attention of so many. I would say the marches backfired on them.

No. It's the migration of illegals away from the border states and into the country as a whole that has made it a REAL issue. When only the border states were complaining, the majority was oblivious. That is no longer the case.

Your right Biscotti, didn't all happen overnight, there are many administrations to blame for allowing the situation to get out of hand. Now with most good jobs shipped overseas and out sourced, dollar falling, huge Nat. debt, no health ins for allot of people, having to have to speak Spanish to get promoted on a job, taxes going up to pay for schooling and medical care for illegals. The situation has come to a head.

It started when people noticed that their neighborhoods were being overrun with non-english speaking immigrants.

Employers started realizing that they can pay "slave" wages under the table.

In the 80's 6 million illegals were instantly granted Amnesty. When Bush tried to do this again with 20 million that is when people started to get mad.

But it seems like they did, because our politicians and media avoided presenting the facts they well knew as to why our schools were failing our hospitals were closing and our services were being drained and ruined for our own people. Then came the marches, and the true numbers, and hence, impacts were more generally known.

And the level of betrayal by our government and bias of our media became apparent, as well.
