As you know Utilitarianism is a modern form of the Hedonistic ethical theory which teaches that the end of human conduct is happiness, and that consequently the discriminating norm which distinguishes conduct into right and wrong is pleasure and pain. In the words of one of its most distinguished advocates, John Stuart Mill,

the creed which accepts as the foundation of morals, utility or the greatest happiness principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. By happiness is intended pleasure and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain and the privation of pleasure (Utilitarianism, ii, 1863).

Below are quotes from what some people say was the father of Utilitarianism; Epicurus, a Greek philosopher (341–270 B.C.E)

"I never desired to please the rabble. What pleased them, I did not learn; and what I knew was far removed from their understanding."

"Nothing is enough for the man to whom enough is too little."

"Of all things which wisdom provides to make life entirely happy, much the greatest is the possession of friendship."

"We do not so much need the help of our friends as the confidence of their help in need."

"Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for."

"If thou wilt make a man happy, add not unto his riches but take away from his desires."

Adoptions are not all, ever, by choice. They are sometimes of "lesser evil discrimination"; but that is not the "primary choice" of the individual adopting when tis so. Say Mary loves Orphan Billy. And, to get Mary, Roger adopts the poor sod too. The fact that Mary's love is courted does not change that Bill was adopted by Roger. Say Mary loves health care reform, and Roger, being of sound mind and body detests the notion of such a selfish person as himself living forever and thus hates health care reform. If Roger loves Mary enough to adopt Bill does that imply there is hope that he "might" (and indeed all Roger's, being so in love with some sort of "Mary" might indeed as well) "support health care reform as their own adopted position?

Don't just quote your essay question word for word, at least reword it... If I like to fart in the office but nobody else likes it, the pleasure I take from farting would have to be so great it overrides all the displeasure it causes. If the farts are poisonous and will eventually lead to extinction for everyone in the office then it would seem appropriate to impose a methane emissions quotient on my a$s as no matter how much I like farting it would never outweigh the loss of utility for all those yet to enter the office.
