I visited a Luthern cemetery and there were a lot of stones turned backward.

Simply a matter of choice by the family. I live inside a historic cemetery and see all kinds of variations.

I have no idea, sounds odd. I know in the cemetary in Austin where my folks are all buried, there are stones facing all different directions, but mostly aimed at facing the road that winds through it.

You mean facing to the west?
Christians face to the east.
Mecca is to the west.
I've seen some facing to the south I guess they worship penguins.

backwards to what? to the road? perhaps the modern road was not there when the cemetary was originally built.
