Thsi was a question that was answered by an Islamic scholar.

Q. It is said that suicide is forbidden in Islam and that the person who commits suicide is destined to go to hell. Suppose a person is suffering from a severe case of depression, or some other mental disease. Should such a person commit suicide, will he also go to hell?

(Name and address withheld)

A. One thing which people often do is to say that such and such a person will definitely go to heaven or to hell. This is something over which none other than God has any control. So to suggest that such a person goes here or there in the hereafter is an affront to God, because it precipitates His judgment.

There are certain verses of the Qur’an and statements by the Prophet (peace be upon him) which tell us that those who perpetrate certain sins will be punished. But then it is up to God to determine what punishment fits every single case, because God judges us individually, on the basis of His perfect knowledge of our intentions and conditions.

It is true that suicide is strictly forbidden, because it is an affront to God. It is like a person saying to God: “You have given me life and I am taking it away.” This is what is meant by the sacred Hadith in which God is quoted as saying of the one who commits suicide: “My servant has precipitated My will with regard to himself! Therefore, I am forbidding him entry into heaven.” But this Hadith applies to a person in full control of his faculties, suffering no overpowering adversity and having a reasonable life. If such a person commits suicide, then may be God will not allow him in heaven.

A person who commits suicide as a result of a mental disorder like depression or some other severe form of anxiety is not in full control of his senses. We cannot say how God will judge such a person, but we trust to God’s justice, because He does not deal unfairly with anyone. We pray for the person concerned, and request God to forgive him. When a man committed suicide during the Prophet’s lifetime, the Prophet was distressed. He did not perform the janazah prayer for the deceased, but he ordered his companions to do it. When they did, they prayed for the man and requested God’s forgiveness for him. This shows that the Prophet did not exclude the possibility of his being forgiven by God.

Many religions consider suicide to be a sin, or otherwise against religious tenants, as the act of suicide is the intentional destruction of a "creation" by the God or Gods (or the ultimate rejection of the "love" of that God or Gods). Not all religions are so inclined, though: in many pagan religions, it is an honorable act under certain circumstances, and represents an understanding that one does exist in a "bigger picture" than just ones own life. As an Agnostic, I am against suicide as I see death as a dropped curtain so to speak; but I would certainly commit suicide were it the only way to protect the life of my daughter.

And I am sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your friend.

They die.

Then they go live with whoever their "Lord" was while they were alive.

If Jesus was their "Lord" they go to heaven and live with Jesus.

If not they don't. They end up in the other place.

How they died is not relavant.

God knows that those who take their own lives were in a very difficult situation.

God understand that even when religions don't.

I know of one large denomination which teaches that those who comit suicide get a one way express ticket to hell. That is the most cruel and un Christ like denomination there is.

That should be proof to most that God has nothing to do with that denomination and those religionists don't know God of anything about God or love.

I so sorry for your friend.

If you'd like to talk to me off line about it, that's ok. See cool link 3 on the 2nd link below.

I believe that if a person is lost enough to believe that their life is no longer worth living, they must be in a state of depression. Having no hope, they can't be thinking clearly so i believe God would have mercy on them. It is a sin, however to take any human life including one's own so the person would probably go to purgatory (where people go to be cleansed and prepared for eventually heaven) However, every situation is different and God's love, mercy, and justice applies specifically and individually for every soul so it is hard to make a general statement.

The same thing that happens to people that commit suicide in any religion. They die. Their life is over. And that's about it.

Firstly my condolences to you & your friends family.

Not sure about religion. Personally I would like to think that for whatever reason people commit suicide, that in the afterlife they find the peace they couldn't find here on earth. God Bless

They go to hell. Do I believe this? I have serious doubts. Having read accounts of those who have attempted suicide and failed, being revived by someone who found them in time, I am very doubtful that eternal hell is the outcome. They report going to "the other side" of consiousness and feeling deep regret for their decision, but hell? No. I believe our God is a loving forgiving spirit who would never condem one of His children to everlasting suffering.

Suicide is not the unpardonable sin! If the person is saved, they are still saved but will answer for their actions to the Lord when they get to glory.
