Christmas doesn't belong to anybody except Christ since the very notion of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ. Of course, NOT all Christmas season rituals are essentially based Christian foundations. Christmas trees, Santa, and his flying deers, and other such stuff were merely added to the established tradition. In a sense, Christians do own Christmas because it is founded and meant to be celebrated by those who believe in Christ. A buddhist or a Muslim or an athests who celebrates Christmas would a hypocrite because they do not believe in Christ and yet they celebrate his coming. Of course, it is also foolish to limit the celebration to the Christian circle since the the birth of Christ epitomizes the love of God, and therefore a Christian must exemplify the same kind of love that God has showed him. Limiting other peoples freedom by saying that Christmas is only for Christians would not exemplify love at all.
So i think, a union between the two is the best answer, that is to say that Christians should celebrate Christmas by sharing Christ to others, whether they are Christian or not.

Originally the festival of the Romans' Sun worship, made over into the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus by Constantine.
Since no one really knows when Christ was born,(it is believed to be sometime in the Spring) Dec. just stuck.
Traditional, and it does not violate any Bible command from God, BUT- the holy day has been twisted and bent out of shape by the materialistic culture over these past decades, shanghaied into being a spending free for all by the retailers, promoting worldliness, which goes against the teachings in scripture.
Not all of us Christians fall prey to the flashy thing it has been made into.
Do we "own" it? It isn't anything that can be owned...it is a Christian Holyday though.

I'm just going to answer it like this: It's called Christmas by Christians because it is about celebrating the birth of Christ. The first 6 letters does not spell Christ for nothing!

How does somebody own a holiday? I merely do not want Christmas watered down into some generic "winter holiday season." It's Christmas, call it Christmas. How one celebrates it or not is a complete matter of free choice. I would not want pagans telling me I couldn't have mistletoe because it was "theirs" first. The more celebration in this old world, the better.

Yes, let the pagans that say we stole Christmas from them celebrate and call it something else. Christmas is from Christ-Jesus and is a Christian holiday.

No, Christmas is an idea and a day, neither of which can be owned in the conventional sense. You can do whatever you want on that day, I really do not care. I am going to celebrate the birth of my Lord.

No but it celebrates Jesus birth. Thats why the name should not be changed from Christmas and take Christ out of it and change it to xmas.
