In this case, I'm siding with the atheists, I don't believe in stigmata either and I'm a Christian.
It's a psychological thing, the body can do amazing things under extreme duress. Stigmata is a useless thing, why would God do it? It's sort of like seeing Mary's face in a pancake, what is the point? God doesn't do pointless things like that, when His hand is involved, it's direct and the message is obvious.

Really now.....
You can't really believe that blood spontaineously appears in the middle of someones palm without being pierced with something....right?
It draws the suckers in to help fill the coffers of the churches.
