I have a lot of friends who are atheists, and it had been my experience that there are two kinds. People who have made informed, well thought out decisions about God and others who feel like religion or God has let them down and therefore anyone who might believe is part of the conspiracy to hurt them.
I too am very spiritual and believe very deeply in a Supreme being, but I agree to disagree. So do many atheists.

Believe it or not but it's because atheists are people. There is a small sect of people who like to insult others. Some of them may be Christians, Muslims Hindus and yes even atheists.

It's not an atheistic thing...it's a human thing in general. I've seen Christians do it, Muslims, Jews, everybody. People feel better when they have some sort of affirmation that they are right, and if that affirmation has to come from insulting other people, then so be it.

I don't completely understand what you mean, because it seems a bit weird to personally insult a group. If you mean consistently name-call people just because they happen to believe something else, that's just bigotry. Bigotry is part of human nature, people feel a need to justify the demarcation of their group. And some atheists have a troubled past within a certain religion and lash out on random members of their former religion for what their priests or family did wrong. Which is not justified but hard to seperate from religion, since religions create such strong group identities.
Oh, and sometimes the more sensitive religious people can put atheists into overdrive. Mocking religious figures is considered "offensive", which I think is a misuse of the term, and leads to confusion over what is personal and what is not. I'll understand if Christians don't laugh about Monty Python's Life of Brian, but if they're offended by it I will make fun of them. I won't make fun of people for going to church, but I will make fun of church (not in church or in front of it obviously), and I will make fun of people who object to me making fun of church. That demarcation (to make fun of a religion but not of religious individuals) is sometimes quite hard to maintain though. Sorry.

I have met many athiests that sensed there is an unseen world on some level inside themselves, but they would repress it or at least never admit to it. They were control freaks who didn't like the idea of something going on that they couldn't put their finger on. The idea of a spiritual world can be very threatening to some people. I think the more frightened ones are the ones that lash out and ridicule others. I think the bottomline is having a direct personal experience. If they don't have it, they don't have it. But some have had personal experience and explain it away because it is way too threatening. Not everything in this world can be explained away, trust me.

I think this is human nature. Just look at religious history. At one point or another the 3 Abrahamic religions all have prosecuted a group for not holding their beliefs. Same thing here, some people think they are above others or are smarter than others because they aren't don't have a relationship with a made up being (in their eyes) so they think those people are stupid.

The same reason some Christians feel the need to personally insult those who don't agree what they do. There are just people who do that.

Same reason some Christians do. They are being immature, or they are having a bad day and lose their temper (happens to even the best of us!). Maybe they are just a bit of a jerk. It's not good for anyone to do that - it sure won't win you the argument or the mind of the person you're talking to.

Pointing out the ridiculous of it all is not meant as an insult but is often taken as being insulting. Its all to do with peoples individual point of view really.
