There is no excuse. First off, did he leave his front door unlocked? How did the cops get in? Second, proper procedure would have been for one cop to stand 20 feet away, weapon drawn, while the other cop woke the man on the sofa. Third, after they did finally identify him, the third taser shock was completely unneccessary. Finally, he was arrested for "belligerance." There is no such crime, you can't be arrested for being "belligerant" as it is not possible to fill in a charge sheet with a non-existent crime description.
This was wrong in so many ways but, ya know something? The People are getting the government they deserve. The cops have been training up to be paramilitary outfits for years and the people just shrug and accept that "it's for your own good" justification. Cops are trained to believe that all non-cops are potential enemies and they treat them as such. When Bush stole the election, people shrugged and accepted the BS story they were given.
The chickens always come home to roost.

Unfortunately some officers (not most) like to abuse their power and this gives police officers in general a bad reputation.
As a domestic abuse survivor, I've had experiences before with pig-headed cops that all but blamed me for the situation. I've also had experiences with good ones that went above and beyond what they had to do to make sure I was safe and not afraid.
These officers should be punished for what they have done- their punishment should include losing their badges.
But, at the same time, I really hope this doesn't taint society's view of police officers even more as a whole. They really are underappreciated- most of the time.

Thats really scarry. Maybe the taser does not hurt extremely bad when your drunk or at the very least awake, but this guy was dead asleep. The shock of being awoke with a painful instrument was probably a lot worse then the actual taser.

I posted a question about a brown skinned guy who was tazered in England when he was in a diabetic coma. About 8 police officers repñied saying " If the guy REALLY was a terrorist".
No complaints on this one, The guy must be white.
How many Pitsburgh officers does it take to put in a light bulb anyway?
These are the kind of guys that ran the holocaust. But I suppose Pitsburgh officers don´t believe in that.

"hiring the scum of the earth or the dumbest people for the police force. "
I think that pretty much sums it up.

Due to the 25 year long "War on Drugs", police can now beat you, taser you, shoot you, even kill you. All they have to say is "I was scared.". Citizens are helpless to do anything about it.

It sounds like not only were those cops stupid, but they were also on a major power trip that night. They should be fired!

I've been tasered. My friend bought all his groomsmen taser as wedding presents. We got drunk as could be and spent the night and wedding day tasering each other. Yeah it hurts, but its not a big deal. Go buy one and try it on yourself. Seriously, its not that bad!!!
