I sometimes run software on my computer which reminds me of Islamic prayer times. And no, I'm not Islamic. But being reminded five times a day, sometimes at very inconvenient hours, is a pretty good kick-start when I'm complacent. To the extent Islam is "backwards", it is because of things like Wahhabism and being tied too closely to some cultures that have struggled with modernity--- and let me remind you, that the cultures in question have struggled with modernity largely because of European, and later, American, imperialism and exploitation. If it weren't for American meddling in favor of the House of Saud, for example, Wahhabism would probably lack the position and wealth it has to spread its pernicious influence far and wide. Islam had the historic disadvantage of being an empire (the Ottomans) in a long terminal decline just as Europe came into its own. As the Ottoman empire slowly collapsed within itself, Europe, awash with its newfound ideas and technologies (many of them stimulated by earlier interaction with the, for the time, *highly advanced* culture of medieval Islam) and just starting on the adventure of European imperialism, cast an eye on its neighbor, and began either conquering or meddling with pieces of it. Almost by definition, the goal of an empire is to keep its subjects submissive. Nothing says "submission" quite like keeping people ignorant and awash in superstition. A more objective, less bigoted eye would look upon Islam and recognize a religion which has much to admire and much to be inspired by (even if those things are not the still-medieval qualities of some Middle Eastern ***cultures*** so beloved by Western imperialists). Islam, in fact, looks more modern in its core outlook, separated from the pernicious postcolonial cultural qualities, than does Christianity or Judaism. An objective eye would also recognize that the decline of an empire accompanied by the rise of backwards, rigidly-fundamentalist, ideas pulling a society towards barbaric practices sounds a little too much like a description of the "modern" USA for comfort. Bigots. Blegh.
