Not seeking information and support for the illness could be far worse than just knowing or believing that you have a mental illness.
Blindly accepting a diagnosis and/or treatment plan without second and third opinions (to rule out physical causes and/or to confirm the specific nature of the illness) could be far worse.
Feeling that you are the only one who has this type of illness could be far worse.
Believing that mental illness is the worst thing that can happen to you could be far worse.
Believing that mental illness (or ANY illness) somehow makes you less than what you are - or less than what other people are - could be far worse. Would you think less of a diabetic? A person with heart disease? A person born without a limb?, etc...?
Isolating yourself from your friends, family and others could be far worse...for you AND them!
I could go on and on, but the point is that:
You are not alone.
You are loved.
You are valuable.
You are obviously very intelligent (judging from your presentation of your question itself)!
You are obviously resourceful....You found YAHOO!ANSWERS, didn't you?
There are resources including medical pros, support groups, crisis hotlines, etc... available to you.
Please search your phone book (or an "advanced option" on a good search engine) for "mental health", "crisis" hotlines, or "social" or "family" services and support listings for your LOCAL government area (town, county, state, etc.) Do NOT be afraid to ask your local government agencies for more information!
FORCE yourself to smile and dance and listen to music while you make the important contacts described above because there is evidence that these activities (as well as spending some time in sunlight everyday) can have a very positive effect on your mood.
I hope that this helps you in some way. I may add some details or "source" links later.
Good luck and Bless You!!!

I think most people who want one aren't necessarily messed up, they're just very naive about the suffering that mental illnesses cause. Some people are fascinated by them and want to feel what it's like. I have five mental illnesses, but if I didn't, I'm sure I'd be curious myself. There are teens who idealize depression because of trends. Both ways, it's short-sighted because they're only seeing it on the surface and not understanding everything you lose when you're mentally ill.

Thats a tough question...
No-one can possibley know how an experience was for someone else therefore you never know if somethings going to be worse...
Mental illness is a horrible thing though!
I have 3 very close members of my family who are really ill through mental illness and i myself suffer from mental illness!
But its hard to say!

Personally, I would say no.
Mental illness, especially the severe illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Chronic Panic Syndrome are all illnesses from hell.
It's never surprises me when these people take their own lives to escape the suffering they endure every day.

NO, in my opinion there is nothing worse that being mentally ill....an outside terror can be avoided/gotten away from but when the terror is in your head, you cant escape, and thats what mental illness is....terrifying.....yes you can say that a terminal illness is worse, living on the streets etc....but these answers will all have come from people who have not experienced mental illness themselves, they believe that these things would be worse....i can tell you that they are not.....i would rather face death that lose my mind. god bless x

There are TONS of things worse than having a mental illness. Just because a person has a mental illness doesn't mean that they change at all, they just require medication sometimes. Think of all the terrible things that could go wrong in life and about the drug addicts and all the wrong in this world, there are PLENTY of things worse than mental illnesses.

I agree with the first answer. For me though there is nothing worse than depression. I don't care that it is usually treatable, it still is worse than death. The only reason to not kill yourself is that life is a lot better afterwards.
