It doesn't matter if it's F1, Nascar, BTCC, whatever. What do companies look for in sponsoring a driver?

Marketability. How the driver's personality,speech and appearance can be used to sell their product. Driving ability comes after all of those.

The ability to drive for one, charactor, being able to deal with the media, getting along with team mates and others, knowledge of the car you are driving, and experience. Now they have driver develoment programs where they start young drivers and bring them up through the series. But i think it's based on the car owner giving such companys the good word about there driver

Exposure. That's why teams work so hard to stay in or try to get into the top 35 teams in owner's points. When an owner can guarentee the sponsor that their car is locked in it makes a HUGE difference.

Someone who represents their company well to their target market. Somone who not only wins races, but is well-spoken, intelligent, personable. The drivers have to be able to answer questions about the car, setups. etc and let's face it, the same sometimes-stupid questions over and over and over.

I feel the most important point: The drivers fan base.
No fans, no consumers.
