Is this a rhetorical question, or are you really concerned with how people reacted when they saw someone tortured, to death? I'll assume you're really concerned;
When people witness attrocities, they may have different reactions. Some are apathectic (lukewarm), some are angry (hot), some enjoy the drama (cold, as in the Roman Circus).
It's the folks that get angry, and start asking themselves questions that are nescessary for the spread of Christianity.
